What does this city actually have to offer? I am not impressed at all. The population reads 5300. We all know that is not right.
I was down on Broadway Street last week. That Pelfrey Apartment Building looks nasty. Concrete is falling off the sides of the walkway and the rails showing. BIG HEALTH HAZZARD!!!
You go to Walmart and see City Police but cars and trucks parked in the Fire Lane. They do nothing. What kind of enforcement is that of the ordinances.
Food City ranks with stench of rotten fish. So the Paintsville Health Inspector is either getting a kickback for passing them or made to overlook the violations.
Then at the Ponderosa Steak House, the food is not monitored, its old and cold. The staff is touching food with out washing hands, and eating as they work.(I got up and left on that time)
You see trash all over the place. Yards, beside the roads etc.
It was published that Paintsville Hospital was one of the top three highest Medical Facilities . Why is that allowed to happen without some type local government interference? Or does the kickback out rule the citizens.
Then there is the Johnson County School Tax. 0.5250 cents on the dollar. Yet teachers do not get a raise, children are given a school supply list so the school does not have to furnish the items, and a grant given so that more money can be obtained for the schools through the free lunch program.
Lets mention about school being dismissed because of a ball game. It clearly reflects that education is second. Sports comes first. Then all the assistant non employee coaches. It should not be allowed. If certification is not needed to help coach then certification should not be needed to come and teach for free. That is what is happening.
There are folks out there with a better understanding of the educational system and the needs of our children that can do much more for our children than some of the certified teachers both city and county.
Then lets talk about the Sherriff, his wife, and all the mudslinging during election time. We all know that is all unnecessary
Last our news paper. The Paintsville Herald
This is nothing but a cut and paste filled with advertisements. Folks read about certain topics that is merely something that is cut and pasted from something else. Why is there not any investigative reporting on real issues and real concerns. Public office spending and which patrol car is using more gas that the other. How many miles is being used when the county property is not on the time clock. How much charitable activity(Shop-with-A -Cop) is not being paid for the officer on the clock. and the list goes on and on.
What about articles being published when the folks are no longer in Johnson County and sending in articles for the Paintsville Herald to add to their cut and paste poster board.
So tell me how the Eastern KY Tourism is an asset when other assets are neglected please.

You said it right with the exception about the sheriff and his wife. They deserve anything stuck to them.
#3 Mar 27, 2014
If I were you, I'd get the hell out. Anyone that is that dissatisfied should find another place to live. I hear Blaine is lovely this time of year.

Sounds like to me Polly you are one of the benefactors of hicks. Truth be known you have kids, no husband and on food stamps. If i am wrong accept my apology.
But please tell me one good thing about the following:
Johnson County Schools
Paintsville City Police
Kentucky Apple Festival
Sports vs Education
Again if the information is wrong above I apologize.

I bet you are a stay at home mom who hasnt made anything better in your community. Guarantee your obese.
#6 Mar 28, 2014
Hey Banner Mule Gotcha there. Raised my 6 kids own my home and land, worked 5-6 days a week -8-12 hours a day. Came home did my house work, cook, cleaned, washed, made time for the kids, helped my parent and inlaws, raise a garden, can and freeze so that we had enough food to get us through.
So If I have a fat ass I deserve it Banner Mule.
I am 5-5 155 lb. so as long as I am fat in my mind and happy with it then I am ok.
Since we are talking a but obesity, I bet you are pot bellied, drink and expect your wife to do all the work. The typical E. Kentuckian male.
Are you one of those pain pill males as well.
They should have you on the tourism committee. a true asset. Again As you mentioned name something good about each of the topics. And clearly have creditable evidence before you jot something down.

You my friend should move... You are simply to good for our little community...
#8 Mar 28, 2014
Rambling, I would have pegged you for a carpenter because you hit every nail on the head. I guess I'm just one that doesn't get it. I don't understand the "typical" eastern Kentuckian mentality though I was born and raised here for nearly 5 decades now.
I don't prioritize life the same way they do. I value quiet time at home to work on my land when I'm not working, not hitting the road in an old beater car to go stir up drama or trade pills. I value clean, clear water not canned or bottled poison like Mnt Dew or toxic alcohol.
I value fresh veggies and fruit not processed crap that can't even be called food in the traditional sense.
I spend spare time (thankful to have a few minutes of it a day) learning to be more self sufficient not trying to find a way to get another hand out or cheat the system.
This is the biggest issue in our area. The priorities and mentality that allow all that corruption you listed to go on.

Slapper John you are ten fold correct. U Haul being too good or a hick, truth still there.
I know for a fact that single mothers & fathers who have children go live with someone (parents) and draw food stamps. All they have to say is they prepare their meals separate. Slapper John you seem honest, would you cook and not allow your child to eat or grand child? I can answer that "NO"! When we Eastern Kentuckians cook all is welcome to eat. So U Haul what is your perception on that lil bit of info?
I heard in Martin County the Pawn Shops have soda stacked like a grocery store where our Eastern Kentuckians use their food stamps and sell them to the pawn shops for a couple dollars.
Asking for some sort of Ethics in our State is that being UNKENTUCKIAN?( I do not know if that is even a word)
Again UHaul can you say something correct about the topics?
#10 Mar 28, 2014
I'm going to open me up a store and sell those rubber tomahawks with a little feather tied to the handle to all the tourists that will be coming through....I'll be rich in no time flat.
#11 Mar 28, 2014
Well I am going to put out houses on the side of the Dawkins trail. They can't stink any worse than the sewage running in the ditchs and creeks near it.
#12 Mar 28, 2014
Why is it every time anyone points out the flaws in this area the only thing the locals can say is, "you should move." Why can't any of the locals ever say "Hey lets make things better." What's wrong with improving things. Every city has it's flaws why doesn't anyone want to clean things up and straighten things up?
#13 Mar 28, 2014
I agree with you 100%. You were very observant and very brave to be so honest. What we really need to do is take charge of the situation because the locals are just going to avoid the issues and bury their heads in the sand. What we should do is an organization that works to fight against all these things.
#14 Mar 28, 2014
One more thing. I think Gov. Beshear should have put out a warning to any business that may want to move here as to how difficult the people are to deal with. It should be like buying a house. The realtor has to give full disclosure to anything that may alter the decision/
#15 Mar 29, 2014
Learn Something New you are correct about their heads in the sand is .
- A prime example was Orville Hamilton and the fraud scheme.
- Mayor and the electriical scheme.
###- How did that Arby;s drive-thru get approved with it being in the direct mode of traffic? If a regular person would attempt such scheme then their permits would be denied.
If there was a song to be named for this county it would be by Loretta Lynn.
"YOU AINT WOMAN ENOUGH TO TAKE MY MAN'
We as citizens are forced to pay taxes and manipulated to adhere to the mobsters thugish rules. "For the people, by the people does not apply in Eastern Kentucky"

Because a certain number of them (all) have come to rely on the terrible conditions they've created. If we were to clean up the area, develop a healthy lifestyle, and begin to be a good place to live and ...( Oh here it comes) work, they might be expected to lay down the game controller, pill bottle, and pick up the garbage they've been throwing out into the yard. In other words, get off their lazy butt and do something.
In old days, the sloth would go near hungry. Now, they are provided everything for doing nothing. Food, shelter, recreational drugs, transportation, and yes even smart phones as well as internet access and it all hinges on the ambiance of poverty and desolation.
Even though I've grown up here, lately I've really considered leaving. I read about the healthy lifestyles people have developed out west. I try to live it here but if you try and run or bike, you've got scores of illegal dogs to deal with or one-eyed retards gawking from their ATVs wondering if you've got a purity mouth but being stayed in place by their dependence on the oxygen tube or insulin pump, thankfully.
I guess you could say I have become somewhat of an isolationist myself because I don't want to deal with the idiocy out there which seems to make me just as backward as them. It's a self feeding society and it's not changing soon. Oh, they socialize but it amounts to drunken or drugged up domestic disputes in these hollows that eventually involves two to four big fat women carrying lies to stir up trouble until they get two or more stupid men to fight (they like to think) over them.
The issue is that these lazy people have had all their basic (and many of their luxuries) met by the government so they become bored and although still too lazy to work or sadly, pick up their trash, they place the importance that most of us put on survival and fitness on USELESS, MEANINGLESS, squabble. The busiest person I've ever met here had absolutely nothing going on yet acted more stressed over their made up drama than if they'd ran a million dollar company.
#17 Mar 29, 2014
now how would change things to stop mobsters and thugs? I do think voting out the bullies. Starting with our currant sheriff and his entourage in that office. The tv constantly showing what a lawless area we live in surely does not encourage tourism in Johnson County.
#18 Mar 29, 2014
I think more concentration should be placed on bringing industry and jobs to the community than on tourism. Nobody wants to come and vacation in an economically deprived area like our's is currently. And to be quite honest I don't think we'll ever be a major tourist attraction as
Gatlinburg, Tennessee for example. Well, maybe a ghost town will be a tourist attraction and that't the direction we're heading towards with no jobs.

But there has never been jobs in eastern KY unless its been coal. The area is so isolated and the population is not the most educated either. I do know that high school graduates can barely spell the town they live in. They know nothing of the US history or the geography. They are coached just to pass a test and nothing about knowledge. My daughter was in the 10th grade when I noticed she could not give back change from a dollar bill. The kids are taught from calculators and computers but cant make it in the world without them. Shame on our educators because I feel they have let out kids down. I tutored my own daughter to handle money and write checks. She had no clue. I asked about the former Presidents of the US. She also had no clue. She said was it important to know at that.
Now before anyone makes hateful remarks about my "dumb daughter" I will tell you she graduated with honors and thank goodness she is learning in college. She told me that her professor said its nothing new to see kids come from this area that could barely read let alone do math.
The point I am trying to make is we are not educating our children to even find meaningful jobs. Some never go to college and when you can get free food stamps and stay at home and get free energy assistance they have no incentive to look for work.
