Connecticut Lawmakers Offer Bill Restoring Free Coffee

Full story: Hartford Courant

Some state lawmakers say that can't believe they actually have to propose a bill to allow free coffee for drivers on Interstate 95 during the Labor Day weekend.

C'mon. They don't drop the scouts off at dark and come back for them 9 hours later. There are adult leaders there at all times. This is a blip on the liability radar for the amount of traffic through and what goes on at a rest area. The DOT is not currently enforcing the security of anyone who goes through the rest stop - there is barely a greeter and a janitor at the "plain" rest areas most of the time.
While I don't disagree, as one who has to pay liability insurance premiums, any entity must be sure to limit themselves to any exposure. Insurance companies frown on anything that involves risk of any kind. Do I think something could happen? Probably not but an insurer might disagree and coverage becomes null and void. I am looking at this from a business point of view. I think the Boy Scouts are a great organization and providing coffee is a great idea.
Just a question - when was the last time a Girl Scout came to your door selling cookies? For me, it's been about ten years. Why? Probably because it is no longer safe to go to strangers' homes.

Have availed myself of their services and appreciate it.It is a great way to stop, wake up and have a decent conversation with people you can trust.I would not worry about the safety of the scouts 'cause i'm sure one of scoutmasters follows the creed and is "prepared"

Typical stupid DOT - blanket rules that benefit nobody. Wanna save taxpaper money?? Destroy this agency from the top down. Give away/sell the palace on the Berlin Turnpike. Fire every one of the idiots that aren't in the bottom 2 rungs on the ladder. You'll save Billions and get better service.

Last month. Ditto Boy Scout popcorn and school wrapping paper. It's perfectly safe to go to my home.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that there are jars for donations at these free coffee stops? Is this a form of fund raising? My only issues with this is that 1)If State Property is allowed to be used by the Boy Scouts, who next? 2) Sorry, but I don't think any child needs to be at a rest stop or weigh station after dark regardless how many chapperone's they have. Kids are kids and this is a tragedy waiting to happen.#3 Our Legislature are Masters at passing knee-jerk, feel good legislation that is never really thought out and leads to problems down the road that end up costing taxpayers in the end (see #1 above.) I my Town they do something similar in that they set up off of the highway usually at a gas station where the owner donates his space. Just my opinion.

Lucky you! I have to buy my Girl Scout cookies in front of the supermarket and I live in a good suburban neighborhood. Maybe there aren't as many Girl Scouts in my area. I'll move to your neighborhood. I miss those cookies!

The article doesn't say why it was that DOT imposed the prohibition. Sure, it's staffed with more than a few mindless bureaucrats, and perhaps their reasoning was flawed or just plain wrong, but whatever that reasoning was -- sound or bizarre -- it should have been reported.

It is however unsafe to come to my house if you're shellfish. No shrimp or lobster has ever made it out alive.

rest areas aren't as bad for these coffee breaks..buffer areas to serve and sidewalks for people stopping by...that truck stop is wide open just waiting for one of those big rigs to come blowing by with spongy breaks...can't wait to see the reaction of these idiot bashers here when your local hate group wants to do public sevice work there...allow one, allow all

In previous articles published last year, all other groups who use the rest areas/ weigh stations, abide by the same rules that were to be applied to these boy scouts. Can't be open between 9pm and 6am, due to concerns for the crazies. Also, they want to use the states electricity and restrooms. When it was suggested to the Troop leader to use a generator like everyone else using the areas for service/fundraising, the troop leader responded that the generator would be "harmful" to the kids.
Also, there was a murder at the house right next to the weigh station. It was always theorized by the police that it was random act due to the easy off an on to the highway at that location.

A tragedy. On the other hand, the cappacino a la vanilla I got last week from Eagle Scout Hedrick on '84 was a little weak, and lacking in body. Not the full flavored robust bean experience I had last week at the '91 rest stop. Come on troops--pick up your game!

Thanks for clearing that up!

That this information had previously been reported, just leads to the question, "Why didn't the reporter include this in the original story?" Why did you have to do his/her work for him/her?

We may never know.

Hallelujah! We finally found the gaping hole in the CT budget! It was the bathroom lights and the half dozen coffeemakers and light bulbs being run by boy scouts on four holiday weekends!

Why would 24 hours operations be banned at rest stops in the first place? There are no homes nearby to disturbe, and there are truckers and other travelers utilizing the stops 24 hours a day.
