Full story: Hartford Courant

Beware of the goblin who haunts the deep dark forests of Cobalt. A goblin - an old legend says - that prevented generations of miners from finding the main vein of a mineral that once produced some of the most ...

Hi,
I am descended from the penfield, stewart, lowenhaupt and the child families.
Please be mindful where you get your info. from...some people are idle gossipers and expound on info they know nothing about. It is patheticly sad to cross paths with a person who insist that they are an authority on your life (this has happened to me already...and if I go back n' forth to the general region you speak of, it is with great secrecy).
Thank you for your interesting account of the Cobalt mines. There were other mines in the region as well for garnets..but the garnets were not of high value, and the mines shut down.
I never heard of any goblins or ghoulies in the garnet mines, but I did hear that it is a possibility that my Mom's uncle, Will Child, had a couple of cows that needed to be deterred from some mines. The Child family had a Witch Hazel industry in East Hampton, CT I think. Grammmie Child used to tell me stories about family members in that general area...I asked here to write them down but she never did...so I am only left with little tidbits.
Mine Brook down by the falls by the CT river used to have a run of alewife (herring) back in the 1960's. I witnessed a whole bunch of older men going down there to take alewife back in 1969. Years later I told a fish and wildlife officer about the alewife run and was told in return, "bull". Well that ignoramus typifies the ignorami I run into all the time in CT (esp. those who try to rewrite physical and wildlife history, my family history, or who think they are authorities on my family history as well...idiots).

I was part of a UConn Geology Class that made the first documented gold discovery in this area in 1985. See NYTIMES article from 1986 here....

I am curious if you have returned to poke around. I am a native and our family long lived in Chatham and trace our lineage through the Loomis family to W. Bradford, Gov. We are much interested in the history. Thanks, Cappy

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Sagittarius

Watch out. Your mind is working overtime in full analytical mode, but you may be leaping to unfounded conclusions and reading too much into situations. The result of all this is that you might start to suspect someone's honesty or loyalty, and wonder what exactly they're up to. Don't accuse them of anything awful just yet because it may turn out that you were totally wrong about them.
