2 weeks or 2 months ... I appreciate seeing that someone will take the time to post what they think of a new restaurant.

This being said, I have no intentions of ever eating there.

Thank you for taking the time to share this information. This sounds just like another typical wanna-be restaurant owner that's just looking for another tax-shelter and yes, I'll bet that this place is closed down within 12mos of when it opened - maybe sooner if he doesn't straighten up.

It was my first time to Hilltop BBQ & Steakhouse on 3/13/11. The atmosphere seemed great. There was only two other parties sitting down eating when we were sat. There were 2 waitresses for the dining room.
Long wait to receive drinks. Long wait for an order of wings, which were out of this world. Our meals were served to another table, taken off their table placed on the tray and brought to us to eat. Mac & cheese tasted like it was a watered down packet of cheese that happened to be lukewarm. Baked beans (which we didn't order but came out to us) were not flavorful and also lukewarm. The pulled pork sandwich was also lukewarm served with a piping hot baked sweet potato that was also out of this world and delicious. The problem was the sampler platter.
It came with Memphis and St. Louis ribs, pulled pork and brisket. The meat on the plate was luke warm, the ribs were red. Now red pork ribs can be great if there happens to be white meat against the bone which would indicate a great smoking process. This was not the case, the meat was red from outside to inside against the bone. The only thing good besides the wings and the sweet potato was the corn bread muffins.
No sight of a manager or owner around to talk to the tables. The server knew of issues and apologized.
Spoke to the Ernie on 3/14/11 to inform him of a case of food poisoning who hung up on me when trying to explain what happened the night before, someone else in our dinner party called and he informed them that the 3rd person in our party having food poisoning wasn't his problem.
What a great customer service attitude he has with trying to build a customer base in a small town area of Connecticut.

Knuckle heads was awesome. East Haddam has nothing left in entertainment or food.
Everyone i know around here is moving North to get out of here because of all the crime. Been seeing U-Hauls all over town lately.
When you come down to it New England really sux. Not worth living here in East Haddam. Every shop keepers coat of arms "WE PROUDLY ACCEPT EBT AND FOOD STAMPS." What's that tell you about the town huh??

Went this past weekend. Chili quesadilla for app was great!

Burger was over cooked (asked for med), cold when served, over powered by bun, and didn't come as ordered. Fries portion was lacking.

Service sucked.

Would be willing to give one more try though.

Well, let me start by saying that this was not our first time to Hilltop BBQ & Steakhouse, and it was not our first time being egregiously disappointed in the food and the management of the restaurant.
I always like to start off on a happy note. The sweet potato fries are absolutely delicious, if you know how to pick through the basket. There were several inconsistencies in the cut and thickness, so while some were cooked to perfection, others were still quite underdone. This of course, can be improved on with learning about knife techniques and practice. However, the flavors were spot on for the fries, whether you had them with the sauces they provide on the table or not.
Let's move on to the Sampler Platter. In the platter, you get a little of everything, which is always nice, especially if you are not sure about what style is going to be cooked correctly today. You get some Memphis and St. Louis style ribs, about four of each if you're lucky, and a rather generous serving of pulled pork and beef brisket. Tonight was an OK night for the Sampler Platter. My only complaint, and I say this every time I go, is that everything is way too dry. Even with the sauces on the table, I was not going to sit there and attempt to moisten the meat, that is something I do a home. It always makes great left overs where I can cook it a bring it back to life, so to speak. The beef brisket was 1/3 gristle, but it did have the tenderness and moisture that the others simply lacked. I will say this, the cornbread that comes with it is good. Not great, not superb, simply good.
And now the part that truly almost ruined the night, the Chicken Fajitas. The mission tortillas came right out of the plastic, you could still smell the bag residue on them, and the restaurant didn't even bother to warm them up. I have always had this rule for restaurants, never and I mean never, offer any sort of fajitas if you can't make fresh tortillas to go with them. It's an insult to the food and to your customers. Now the chicken. Can you say salt lick? It was truly inedible. The marinade they used on the check was a tad tasty but for the amount of salt that was in it. Needless to say, I left the entire skillet alone.
Now here's where it becomes interesting. After politely telling our waitress about the inedible chicken, she offered to get me something else of equal or lesser value. I told her that I was done for the night and that I just waned our check. When the check came, the Chicken Fajitas were still on our bill. I asked if there is anything they can do to remove the over salted chicken, and was told, "There's no manager here and we're not allowed to remove items from the bill." Wait, what? Did I hear her right? There's no manager? I was beyond perplexed that there was no liaison between the kitchen and the wait staff, and no one to be held accountable for running this restaurant. After getting into a lesson about how a restaurant should be run, she wanted my name and number so a manager could contact me at a later date about my dining experience. No, I don't think so. If a manager wants to know about "my dining experience," they should have been here to talk to me face to face. I reluctantly gave her my credit card to pay the bill, yes, with the chicken still on it. Magically, five minutes later, she comes back and tells me that, "it's been taken care of." I look down at my bill, and the chicken had been removed. I gave her a rather generous tip for stepping up and taking care of her customers.
There is one more thing I need to point out. I the restrooms, there is no hot water to wash your hands and this is not the first time either. It was little comfort that when I brought this issue to our waitress, she told me that she would fix it again. I believe this to be a major health code violation and it is something that needs to be resolved permanently.
Would I go back again, yes. Why? I make really great left overs.

Being new to the area, we SO wanted to like this place. We really do love to support local businesses... We've ordered take-out twice and been super disappointed both times. The first time, they completely forgot to pack a bbq salad in our bag- a bummer, to say the least. But they did say that we could have a credit next time we came in. The ribs were dry and the food was all around not great. We recently decided to give it another try. While the salmon dinner and the beans were good, the rest of our $65 order (including ribs again, which were so awful we couldn't eat them) was pretty bad. We paid $6.50 for the kids mac & cheese, which was literally a box of kraft. I could have made that for my kids for a dollar, and it would have been hot. When I called to say that they had- yet again- forgotten to pack some things in our take-out bag, I was basically given a quick apology and dismissed. By the way, our "credit" was not found when we went back the second time so they gave us an extra big garden salad. Not cool, considering the salad they forgot the 1st time was a bbq chicken salad. They need to CHECK THE ORDER before they complete a take-out transaction. Maybe the food is better in the restaurant. I certainly hope so. Perhaps we will give Hilltop another chance, but certainly not with their take-out.

We questioned the bartender about the price of the wine. Knowing our discontent, she should have brought over the owner

My wife and I ate here about a year ago and the food and service was terrible. I received a resturant.com gift certificate recently and I saw that Hilltop was participating in this program. We talked it over and decided to give them another try out. We arrived around 6pm on Friday night and there were quite a few people there. When we walked in the hostess told us she would be right with us. Approx. 10 minutes later she came back and asked us how many were in our party. We told her 2 and she then grabbed the menus and was about to see us when the owner came over and said "all we have is bar seating" I told him I wanted regular seating and he said snotty it will be 20 minutes. I then looked into the restaurant and saw three double table tables and said why canít we have one of those. He said those are only for large parties. I told him, fine I'll wait for a table. He them left and went into the kitchen. The hostess then turned and said come on I'll seat you now. We were seated and started to look over the menu. My wife likes a glass of wine before dinner and could not find a listing. Our waitress came over and my wife asked her if they served wine and what kind. She replied red or white. My wife asked what kind and she said she didn't know but would find out. She came back a few minutes later and started to tell us what they had and said she couldn't remember the rest. Ok thatís fine, give us a beer instead. We then told her that we were already to order and told her we had a Resturant.com certificate. She then said we don't accept them anymore. I told her that there was a sign on the front door that stated that they do and that they must be presented before ordering. She then said rudley I said we don't accept them anymore. We told her Thank you and that we were going somewhere else. While we were putting our coats on by the front door the owner came over and was giving us attitude. He said Resturant.com is a scam and that he doesn't accept them anymore. I told him about the sign on the front door and he said fine go somewhere else. What a crappy night out. We ended going somewhere else. We will never go here again. The owner is a total jerk and his wait staff is totally clueless.

How dare you say this about East Haddam/Moodus? Honestly, you sound pretty pathetic categorizing an entire town and writing such ignorant and rude remarks on an online forum. I lived in East Haddam my whole life prior to college, and now living in NYC, I still cannot wait to come home. I'm a very well educated woman (that doesn't wear camo hat) and actually am going to medical school. Usually I wouldn't waste my precious time commenting on someone's sad and ignorant comments, but this one truly bothered me. If you don't like our town and you don't care for an establishment, don't go. It's that simple; if you have nothing better to say, don't say anything at all. Thank you.

Had a really rotten experience there about 1 month ago. Was promised a gift certificate , for our inconvenience and horrible service, by both of the owners which we never received. it's a shame because we have heard great things about this place and the previous visit we had a good time but not this time. The owners customer service and follow up to this particular situation was a joke. I will stand behind every word that I have wrote here. We will put our hard earned dollars of elsewhere.
