What constitutes a surprise?

An archaeologist in South Carolina thinks that a fully-articulated chicken skeleton discovered in a dig is a "surprise." A commenter on this site suggested that a bigger surprise would be finding a fart in a paper bag tied up with ribbon, fully articulated and ready to rip. Times change, ideas change. What do you think makes a "surprise," East Haddam?
