The beet growers should have to find a new crop. They have used tariffs to keep out inexpensive sugar for decades. The consuming public pays for these rich farmers to take expensive vacations. I have no sympathy for them and wish our senators had the courage to help the public and stop protectionism.

The two things that are the worst for us, sugar and tobacco, we pay farmers to grow. Ridiculous, end the gravy train.

They shouldn't destroy the crop, they should harvest it and send it to the ethanol plants. It should be able to produce alcohol as well or better than corn feedstock..........

The crop is not the farmers', it belongs to the processor. The contract would have to be revised to allow such use of the surplus ...

They plant extra every year to ensure enough product in the case of a drought or other disaster.

You know what, the crop is the farmers'. Who do you think owns the cooperative?

What kind of people throw away food/money? I thought a cooperative of farmers would have more sense than the government......

yea, you are correct.

I have seen this same thing almost every year for twenty years and also think it is disgusting. At the very least it could be ensiled for feed. I pick up the beets I see on the road and feed them to the chickens.

They could plant enough excess beets to run it through the winter, then in the spring, switch feedstocks.
