Wow! What a powerful story. It puts it ALL in perspective. On these boards, knuckleheads trade comments about insignificant stuff like Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith, and the REAL people we should be writing about (or at least thinking about) are these elderly gentlemen - who as mere kids - sixty-two years ago, stormed the beach at Iwo Jima. 7,000 American Marines died in one month. I'm sitting here in front of this computer trying to imagine the horror they faced that day!
How would I have behaved? I know I would've been scared Sh**less, THAT'S for sure! Yeah, I think about today's kids in Iraq, too. Different war,
though. For the basic same reason, however: The Japanese attacked us first at Pearl Harbor, and the
Al Qaeda scum attacked the World Trade Center. Anybody that doesn't see the parallel, is out to lunch. Oh, well, THIS thread is about the Iwo Jima vets. Thanks, guys!

good article.

but in the end wars are about politics and politicians it has never been about the soldiers because they are only the tools of the politics.
the soldiers follow orders given by the higher ups, they fight to protect their friends right there and then.. the whole greater good or cause may be in their minds but honestly what are they thinking about at that moment in battle?.. probably how to stay alive and make sure their fellow soldiers stay alive, not some political message on tv or "save the world" etc.. more like, "how the heck do i stay alive and not get killed and not get all my fellow soldiers killed"
