As a child in the 50's & 60's I attended a summer camp in Mt. Bethel, PA. It was owned by Ella & Virgie Frankel. Does anyone remember this camp & what happened to it?

Hi. I attended camp waltell in the 1950's with my brother Fred Fields and cousin Margie and Franklin. I think the camp was sold and divided into two new camps.

Hi Dave, I just noticed your response to my post. We were probably at Camp Waltell around the same time you were. Lots of my relatives attended: Judy Cooper, Jane Lebow, Michael Kennis, Jeffrey Kennis, Bruce Rothenberg, Suzanne Rothenberg and Samuel Lebow. Do you remember any of them. Also Al Shanker was the director who later became the head of the teachers union in New York.

I hope somebody reads this post. My parents live in Mount Bethel (and I grew up there) where Camp Waltell was. I would like to find out more.

My wife, Faye Bornstein, also attended. Ella and Virgie were her Aunt and Uncle.

What years was Faye a camper? I was there in the mid to late 50's.

My parents live in what we believe was the main house. They have an old building with 8 small rooms and one large room on top. I would really like to know if anyone can tell me what kind of camp it was.

I thought Michael Kulicke currently lived on the former campgrounds.

Waltell was a summer camp, with facilities for parents to visit. The campers were largely made up of Jewish children from the New York Area.

Ella's brother, was Dr. Mandel Frankel, hence, Walt-Ell. Ella's husband at the time the camp was started was Walter Fideau.

He does, and my parents live in the house next to his. I was told by someone I used to work with that they live in the main house. She only told me that she used to work there when she was younger and stayed in my parents current house. She told me it was the main house (whatever that is).
We did know some of the names from paperwork found in the building, but not all of them.
Thank You for the information.

I'm very interested in the history of this camp, because I am a descendant of Ella and Mandell Frankel. I want to piece together more of its history. My father worked for 'Uncle Manny' in the early 40s when the camp was more of a small, catskill-style resort. It was also on or near the farm Dr. Frankel (Manny) owned. Any further information would be appreciated!

Since neither Manny or Ella had children, which family member are you descended from?

Both. They were cousins on my fathers side.

This is the thing, RuffMoore; I am piecing together a branch of family history for which all I have is anecdotal info from my father, now deceased. I don't know who 'Faye' is/was, but I do know Manny and Ella are cousins, albeit distantly by now. Ella came to my batmitzvah 39 years ago. That was the only time I met her in person. I've only heard stories, and very colorful ones, about Manny.

My wife sends a holiday card to Philip and Harold Gorfien each year. She's Faye. Her mother was a Frankel.
