this thing does echo thourh out the whole town. i live on gore rd and it pounds agaist this mountain. any way hail stones are prouduce in the upper levels of a supercell thunder storm sometimes 20 to 30 thousnd feet high and by rain droplets rotating up and down going from warm area's up to the cold spots high up till they become to heavy for the wind to keep them aloft and then they fall to the grond. what makes them think this ungodily noise is going to do any good down at gound level. it should be banned from use even during daytime . looks like sombody is getting rich and framewrs need to learn about weather before they get scamed with this thing. and oh yea hail can form at night just as often as it does during daylight hours. Diamond needs to learn more about thunder storms

Uhh... but the fact is that the cannon, which produces decibels in the hight to low 50s according to the article, is nothing compared to thunder, which averages at 90-110 decibels. And, doesn't that usually accompany storms. Actually, 50-60 decibels is about the same as loud talking. Wow, I can see how that would bother you.
Gee, Margaret Booker didn't know you could hear it way down in Mass? Just be quiet and no one would no one would know how smart you are.
If 45 decibels is against the law then when is the law going to do something about people on their stupid Harleys who tamper with the exhaust so they can make noise? Please grow up...we are not impressed with this garbage.
Better yet, what about the people who add exhaust enhancers to their cars, or blare loud obnoxious music out their windows? |

We are talking about the hours between 10:00pm and 6:00am are we not? For those of you who feel that those effected by this should have to live with it, I curse you with your neighbors yapping dog every night all summer long!

What I gathered from the original article is that this is only used if there is a threat of hail during a thunderstorm. Regardless of the hours, it's not like there are thunderstorms every evening, and it's not like every thunderstorm presents the threat of hail. Since thunder tends to be loud in and of itself, why would this be any sort of distraction during a loud storm? Another situation blown out of proportion. |

yea but they use it everytime it rains or thunder's. and yes it is loud even on gore rd. my point of this is that it can not do any good in the first place. they got ripped off and I can't beleive how stupid they really are.30,000 doolars scammed. learn how hail is formed in the first place

My ex broke wind at higher than 50 db. And that didn't stop hail either.
Seems like every sob wants to whine about something. |

Town Clerk Tim Corcoran made this comment, "This just really can't continue," he said later. "One way or another it's got to end. If somebody had a boombox going the police would go and shut it off."
hmmmmm..... when has a boombox saved someone $600,000!? To compare it to a boombox is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Also a boombox is continual noise as the hail cannon is just a sharp boom. oh and i live in bennington and i don't believe i even ever heard it. its been described to me as like sounding to a "civil war re-enactment cannon". well we better ban those too. And sirens man those are way louder than 45db. better get rid of sirens, they may be saving lives but as Tim put it, "If somebody had a boombox going the police would go and shut it off." Hope they don't have to turn on their sirens Tim. |

so let me stand outside your house and shoot a shot gun off every six seconds. don't think you would like it. as I said I live on gore road that's about 8 to 10 miles across the valley from there and it sounds like somebody shooting down the road. june 29th 6pm a rain storm came not thunder or hail of any kind and that damm thing was going off again.
okay. if your own house and property was in trouble and you found something that more than likely will protect it from being destroyed and what you get to protect it may be an annoyance at times to others, would you not do it? and others should stand beside you to help you protect your investment!! its not like this thing is constant. you are correct it did go off today and i finally heard it! and you know what as i'm writing this at 11:57p.m. its thundering!! its what we like to call a preemptive strike against the hail, storms have been in the forecast all day. also its pretty much pointless to shoot off the cannon when the hail is already formed, you need to shoot it off BEFORE IT FORMS so it doesn't even have a chance of coming down.
Lets not run the apple orchard out of town b/c of noise!! this economy sucks as it is and some things like the orchard have remained prosperous so lets try to keep it that way. put yourself in someone else's shoes. no offense but $600,000 is worth more than your half an hour of peace. |

It's 1212 am and the boom of the cannon is going off.Noise in the night!Louder then any thunder storm.Every 6 seconds would not mind but vibrates the dam house.Take a act of god anytime. At 1219 am the 80 to 85 db of booms ( SCANNER LAND )MOST BE A WAR THE BOOMS HAVE BEEN TURNED UP! To bad it was not fire works we could at lease watch them .

Having just returned from Iraq it helps me sleep. Like incoming off in th distance.

I live just of Middle Pownal RD. the cannon started at 12:00 A.M.and lasted a little over half an hour. We had a down pour of rain and thunder and I could hear the cannon above it all. The talk on the police scanner said it was between 85-87 db, it was louder than it has been in the past. With the summer weather and the windows open it it is quite anoying.
If you feel this is blown out of proportion, please come to my house. This is very loud can goes through the entire town, it is disturing sleep. I hear it go off about once a week at night. Last night was over an hour, it woke up my kids. For veterans, like my spouse, it brings back some horrible memories. It sounds like bombing. This fruit cake orchard owner owes this town an apology! |
You people don't really think the town will do a flipping thing about this do you? HA HA HA get real. Unless it affects the sleep of the town's nepotistic friends you won't see a freaking thing done. Don't like it, Well WELCOME TO BENNINGTON...unless you are in the same clique you won't see any change.

Lets see. humm... "Idiot" not "Idiots" "Their" not "There" "stupidity" not "supidity" I'd would bet you would be the first one to complain if you didn't get your apples because the crop was ruined. If there is even a slim chance the Boomer breaks up hail before it can fully form It's worth a shot to try it. |

To Ms. Booker. Where do you live in Bennington. I live in southern Bennington and my house rocks when the cannon goes off. I am about 2 miles away. I feel bad for the people at the base of the hill. Before you make anymore ill informed comments take a ride up to Carpenter Hill when the cannon is going off. You also demonstrate a lack of scientific knowledge, decibles are a logarithmic scale. Also, do you sleep comfortable with a person next to you talking loudly? Think about what you say before you put it out there for the public to see.
