I went to this park, & you walk down this trail & stuff. I was trying to get to the cross on the bluffs. But I ended up up somewhere what looks like an old seminary????? I've never heard anything about it.

You were at Pere Marquette Park. What you saw was the lodge.

The blue pool is about 40 ft deep. There was a murder at the pool in the 80s the county drained it an recovered the body. I walk around the bottom of it. So much for bottomless pit. Just an old rock quarry filled with water.

A couple of Buddy's and I went back there like a week or two ago. The water looks very dirty and large amounts of trees are in the "pool" floating. But it still is something very cool to look at, I wish I was able to live back in the 1960-1970's to see the actually blue in the "pool". Rumor has it, its bottomless. I wouldn't dare try to go scuba dive in the water, but it would be a hell of a experience to see what is really down there. I did hear that people dropped train cars, automobiles, etc. down in the pool. Possibly, a cave never founded. We will really never know. It remains a mystery and probably will forever. I think that the State of Illinois should clean it and investigate what really is down there. I think that would be an eye opener, if anyone has any information, pictures, etc. Post them on here, I'd highly appreciate it. Thanks!

I was last there in the late 70's or 80's. I was looking for fossils on the bluffs in that area. The pool was there, appearing stagnant. The water to turbid to see anything below the surface. The area was overgrown with brush and smaller trees. Tall grasses in exposed areas. My dad told me he and friends used to swim there; that some dove off the bluffs. I had heard a train derailed nearby and entirely sank into the pool. There are (were) railroad tracks close by. We knew it as being bottomless. Anyway, I found my fossils and am glad I saw 'blue pool.'

I went to school at LC in 2001 and heard a bunch of stories from people that grew up in Alton. I found the stories fascinating! It wasn't until I read the book "Weird Illinois" from Troy Taylor that I found out the real truth behind the Blue Pool. He said in the book it was in fact a small quarry back in the day. Sometime in the 80s or 90s they did have to drain the quarry for some reason. All they found was that the Blue Pool was only 30-40 ft deep (not bottomless with underwater caves) they also just found an older vehicle in the water and just a bunch of big big catfish. Still a cool place to see! I do remembering reading in the news that someone did jump off the bluffs 6 or 7 years ago and died after hitting a tree in the water. which is why the fence is now up.

There are more myths about blue pool than facts that tend to pop up in discussion. I am an Alton native, and have hiked the area and visited blue pool on many occasions.

Here's the skinny.

- It is off limits to the public and the Madison County Sherriff's Dept will arrest you if they find you have gone through the fence that's falling apart.

- It's located about a mile up from the Piasa caves, which are mainly mining caves unless you go back into the woods, and go through a sink hole and you can find a real cave that even has a natural spring inside.

- It's not a natural formation. It's a former quarry, and it's about 80 feet deep. It was drained in the early 80s during a murder investigation and a car and several carts and other mining items were also found.

- They started dumping trees in it, which are hidden under the dark water. This is what kills kids who jump in from the top of the bluff. They hit these trees, are knocked unconscious and they drown.

- There were never train cars in it. It is not bottomless. It used to be clear/blue before it was polluted by dumping. Now, the water looks no different than that of the Mississippi.

- You can't see the water from the river road, but you can see the bluffs that line it. You can also access the top of the bluff from The Nature Institute, although you'll have to pass "No Trespassing" signs.

- More than 5 people have died there by accident. Several other bodies were dumped there as well.

- Just to the East of the pool is where Hopp Hollow Trail began, back in the 1800s, that winded through the woods towards Hopp Hollow Farm, located near Rozier St today. This trail was used to carry small pox infected bodies from the quarantine on Sunflower Island during the prison outbreak during the Civil War, up to a mass burial site which can still be found on Rozier St. This area is known to be haunted, many bodies were dumped along the trail and never taken all the way to the burial site and did not recieve proper burial.
