Dr. Larry Atwood

3 years ago today, my husband, Tom, went into acute on chronic respiratory failure -- followed by kidney, liver and heart failure. Seizures began at the ER. This was 3 days after his last office visit and 4 days after testing apparently revealed his respiratory failure, although Atwood never passed that on to us. Dr. Atwood sent him home without telling us he was sick. We called him 2 days before Tom's collapse (more than once) trying to get Tom some help. Dr. Atwood apparently couldn't diagnose Tom's breathing collapse or he didn't care enough to help him. On the way to the ER that morning, I figured a couple of days in the hospital and a few breathing treatments was all Tom needed. Instead we get there and I find out that Tom was considered terminal. I wouldn't take a dead rat to Dr. Atwood because I think he'd find a way to make it more dead.
The chronic part of Tom's diagnosis meant Tom had been failing for awhile -- backed up by the first specialist in Joplin telling me that Tom had been very, very sick for a long time. Yet Dr. Atwood didn't seem to catch that either.
I was just in total disbelief that morning thinking it just couldn't be happening because Tom had just been to the doctor. I think reality set in about 10 days later when a surgeon sent to evaluate Tom for a tracheotomy told me Tom had so many major things going on that it probably would just be a waste of time. I cried all nite that nite.
