Federal appeals court upholds abortion access for Missouri inmates
“This is a court ruling and we will have to abide by the court order as we have been”
A federal appeals court on Tuesday affirmed the rights of female Missouri inmates to obtain elective abortions while incarcerated.
The unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel of the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals came on the 35th anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark abortion ruling in Roe v. Wade. The ruling also throws out a policy by the administration of Gov. Matt Blunt and the Missouri Department of Corrections that restricted an inmate's access to abortion.
Thomas M. Blumenthal, the St. Louis lawyer who brought the suit on behalf of an anonymous Missouri inmate identified as 'Jane Roe,' applauded the court's decision. Read more
