Both the city and county made some auspicious personnel moves this week that have left many in the community wondering if ulterior motives were in play. The decision to fire Mr. Celestino Hernandez from his 30 year post as the City of Eagle Pass’s City Planner was met with criticism by news mediums and city staff. Hernandez had been known as a straight forward – no nonsense leader in city hall and butted heads with more than just a few politicians. Through it all, Hernandez was recognized as a civic leader with a knack for fairness. His stellar performance however; was not enough to save his job this week. The exact reason for Hernandez’s dismissal is unknown; the move was not based on any ethical or criminal actions according to one high-ranking city employee.
Hernandez contends that he was caught unaware and was quietly escorted out of City Hall shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday morning. Hernandez had been on point for some of the biggest projects in Eagle Pass including the ICT, infrastructure and attracting new businesses to the area. Mayor Ramsey Cantu would not elaborate on the exact reason as to why Hernandez was let go but did stress that neither he nor council are responsible for the hiring or firing of any city employees. Hernandez however, disagrees ; and believes that the motives were politically motivated. City Manager Daniel Valenzuela was not available for comment but did release the following.
“As City Manager, I made an administrative decision this morning to terminate City Planning Director Celestino Hernandez for just cause. Mr. Hernandez is still owed his due process; because of this, I will refrain from giving out details of his termination. The goal of this administration is to provide the best possible service to our citizens; anything less than this is unacceptable. This entails all City staff working toward a common goal of improving the quality of life for our community. The Planning Department is integral to this goal.” Daniel Tijerina will now head the department in an interim capacity.

First of all Celestino did NOT have the post of city planner for 30 years. FAR FAR from it! Unless you worked with him during the time he was a city planner, you don't know what you're talking about. Me consta. And as far as Celestino thinking that it was politically motivated, well what can I say, you live by the sword and you die by the sword! And that my friend was the problem. Me consta.

Post is a reprint of the Gram story. Gram's job is to go out and find out why Hernandez was fired not to give us opinions and call it news. To begin with the Gram should know City bylaws give the Council only the power to hire and fire the city manager and municipal court judge.

Dang, one lesson to learn from all this is not to piss off Ramsey. Just ask Chuy Olivares, Mary Jane Salgado, Glen Starnes, Chad Foster, etc.

Fact: The city manager fired Celestino Hernandez!
Fact: The Mayor and Council do not hire and fire this position!
Fact: Celestino Hernandez was fired for not doing his job; doing his poorly and/or; doing his job in a discriminatory manner or even crookedly!
Fact: The news media should report the facts, not come out with false information that he had been with the city for 30 years and that he perform his job well!

You forgot one major fact: Ramsey threatened to axe Valenzuela if he didn't fire Hernandez. The council can indeed fire the city manager.

firings, firings firings. this will probably result in lawsuits, lawsuits, lawsuits. and guess who will pick up the tabs, the taxpayers of eagle pass. everyone knows that mr. hernandez has always been a crooked person, while did it take so so long to fire his ass. why? because he has always been protected by other crooked politicians. eagle pass voters, next time you vote, make sure you vote for the best qualified canditate(and in eagle pass no one is well qualified). and regarding true facts published in local newspapers, eagle pass has never had a reliable newspaper that actually tells the truth of what actually happens in eagle pass, being city, county or school district. politicos, ya no se hagan pendejos and stop wasting our taxpayers $'s. politicos, if you plan to hire or leave the person selected for the city planner position, make sure he is well qualified and not take the same road that "crooked" hernandez took.

Mijares never liked Celestino in the first place. He always talked negative things on how he was doing his job. He would always make it public in his show. Maybe thats why he wants credit for his firing.
