Bats in Schools
Texas laws pertaining to bats
State law requires that a district take specific actions after bats are found in a school facility:
The bat and colony (if present) must be removed.
Repairs must be made so that bats are excluded in the future.
The areas where bats roosted must be disinfected.
A bat must be captured (if possible) and submitted to a state-approved laboratory if:
It is found in a room with an unattended child, a sleeping person, or an intoxicated or mentally impaired person.
There is the possibility that a person has had direct contact with a bat.
Approved labs are those that have been designated by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The department maintains a listing of rabies laboratories at http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/idcu/disease/rabi... .
Protections for bats
Bats are protected by federal and state regulations. It is a federal violation to use chemicals—including insecticides, rodenticides, disinfectants, and mothballs—to kill bats ( http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annu... ).
According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Code,(Chapter 63, Section 63.101; http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/PW... ), no one may hunt, sell, offer for sale, buy, offer to buy, or possess after purchase a bat or any part of a bat, dead or alive.
This rule does not apply to animal control officers, peace officers, or health officials who capture a bat that they consider injured or diseased. Also exempted are people who are licensed to provide pest control services and those who transport a bat to a laboratory for testing if the bat has or may have exposed people or domestic animals to rabies.
A bat may be removed or hunted if it is inside or on a building occupied by people. A person may transport a bat to have it tested by a laboratory if rabies is suspected. Also, bats in buildings can be legally removed or evicted.

I bet the incompetents over at EPISD are completely clueless about these bat laws.

So you'd prefer the bat story to be covered up, not reported on?

No actually fair reporting would be good. Meaning the good and bad in our community. Not just the negative- and sport reports doesn't count as the only positive thing in our community. Then the paper is called business journal and all it does is reports negative aspects of our government entities as if they didn't nothing positive. The paper doesn't cover new businesses or why businesses closed etc.

Update on Eagle Pass High School
(press release) The Eagle Pass Independent School District (EPISD) is committed to provide the highest quality of care and attention to every situation. The health of all students and staff within our district is our first priority and that is why we have contacted the Department of Health and Human Services for an evaluation of Eagle Pass High School.

With the recommendations that were made, EPISD has arranged for Commercial Bat Control to visit Eagle Pass High School on Monday January 20, to ensure safe, effective and humane bat removal and exclusion. These professionals will thoroughly inspect the building for points of entry, seal off any areas that are found, and mount “Bat Excluders” on the exit openings.
The Commercial Bat Control does not use any poisons or pesticides instead they use methods that are effective. We respect the concerns of parents and safety remains our number one concern.
Our District remains steadfast with our responsibility of providing a safe environment to our students and staff of our community.

It is not the journal awards. It is the dog and pony show. All winners are hand picked by them. People need to understand it is a fundraiser for them. Where do the profits go? You be the judge.

You morons finally realized the scope of work is something maint. workers cannot handle. That dept. has never done anything, the right way. I do not blame them, the people in charge are total illiterate in managing a facility. From the previous Director to the present. Please, somebody help them.
The removal process of pathogen contaminated droppings, when disturbed, will pose a health hazard to those doing the work and the general population downwind of the operation. Through ventilation system is another way to spread these organisms into other areas..
The safety of students/staff can be assured only by killing the causative agents of Histoplasmosis, PRIOR to cleanup activities which could cause these organisms to become airborne.
Did these untrained maintenance workers protected themselves and did they use any protocol for cleanup while they worked on last week? Does the district care about the safety of their personnel?
Following the cleanup, will decontaminated building surfaces be sampled by lab test to confirm that decontamination was successful and the affected area is free of any health hazards? Will these results be presented to the public.
