The video of an Obama supporter bragging about having an “Obama phone” has gone viral on the web, but where do these “free cell phones” come from?

The program is called Lifeline, established in 1984, originally created to subsidize landline phone service for low income Americans, funded by government-collected telecommunication fees, paid by consumers.

In 2008, the program was expanded to support cell phones which quickly escalated the cost of the program. In 2008 the program cost $772 million, but by 2011 it cost $1.6 billion.

A 2011 audit found that 269,000 wireless Lifeline subscribers were receiving free phones and monthly service from two or more carriers. Several websites have been created to promote “free” government cell phones, including the” The Obama Cell Phone” website at Obamaphone.net .

Rep. Tim Griffin R-Ark. has proposed a bill to eliminate federal subsidies for free cell phones and has produced a great YouTube video highlighting the runaway cost of the program.

If the Republicans didn't have their hands in the poor people's pockets for so long, then everyone would be on a level playing field. Big R's have let their greed destroy the american way, so they have no right to bltch now.

Obama is the one who hangs with the rich folks! He has more friends in Hollywood and on Wall Street than Bush could ever have hoped for. He was playing with the filthy rich Tiger Woods the other day!

No, actually Republicans are NOT paying for the children or phones, internet service, health care, etc. Taxes collected are inadequate to pay for what is spent by our government.

Congress doesn't do it's job. This includes Republicans, Democrats & all others. Those things you describe as well as defense and infrastructure spending are not paid for at all. The money is borrowed. The debt just continues to be passed along.

One day the inadequacy of our elected officials will catch up to us. They blind you by pointing fingers at each other. The truth is much more sinister. They make themselves wealthy at your expense.

gorba- taxes are not "inadequate"! It's spending that is too high! Spending has been rising double digits for years and years! But according to many Democrats & Obama we don't have a spending problem...

Try again...

Here are the average spending increases per year in raw dollars (not adjusted for inflation) in descending order by president:

President
Fiscal year baseline
Last fiscal year
Average percentage increase per year
Carter 1977 1981 16.4
Nixon 1969 1975 13.5
Johnson 1964 1969 11.0
George W. Bush 2001 2009 10.2
Reagan 1981 1989 8.6
Kennedy 1961 1964 7.1
George H.W. Bush 1989 1993 5.8
Clinton 1993 2001 4.0
Eisenhower 1953 1961 3.6
Obama 2009 2013 1.4

So, using raw dollars, Obama did oversee the lowest annual increases in spending of any president in 60 years.

Taxes collected ARE inadequate to pay for what is spent by our government. That is a fact, not an opinion. You can't agree or disagree. It's a fact.

You folks aren't blind to reality are you? Having an agenda is one thing but denying reality is stupid.

You're using White House figures for that crap. Obama has DOUBLED the national debt in four years! he has spent more than EVERY previous President COMBINED!!! Does that sound like he's has overseen the lowest spending?

Welfare spending alone has increased 32% during Obama's first 4 years!

Federal spending on more than 80 low-income assistance programs reached $746 billion in 2011, and state spending on those programs brought the total to $1.03 trillion, according to figures from the Congressional Research Service and the Senate Budget Committee.

Food Stamp spending has DOUBLED since 2008 & Medicaid spending has went up 24% since 2008! These are figures from actual government agencies- not some website that spins the numbers to help Obama.

By the way, Obama has been screaming about the sequestration but it was HIM and the Democrats who asked for it in the first place. The GOP shouldn't have went along with it so I blame them too, but for Obama to act like he's against it is pitiful!

If those figures are accurate or even close, why do you think that is? Any guesses? Let's see...what happened around 2007 & 2008? Wasn't there some sort of financial crisis? Didn't lots and lots of people lose their jobs? Haven't many people been out of work for so long that they're no longer even reported in unemployment figures? In addition, what has happened to the cost of food since 2008? Has it gone down?

You can blame whoever you like. I don't think Obama has been a good president myself. But when people can't find work what else do you expect them to do? Oh wait, I know. "Git a job!", right? Unemployment has caused an increase in food stamps, not an effort by anyone to TRY and get more people on food stamps. That's a stupid premise.
