Just heard from THP that I-55 bridge over the Mississippi River is going to be close shortly because a barge hit the bridge. Has anyone else heard this?

Don't know about the interstate closing, but I DO KNOW that a barge hit the bridge a little bit ago. I'm sure that the road will be closed until MODOT can inspect it

I-55 bridge would have to be in St. Louis or somewhere. Think that is I-155. Wondwe if they will open the ferry again. That use to be fun crossing the ferry whan I was a kid.

It will be hard to inspect if the river gets above where it was hit. River is rising fast.

That was caused from the explosion at the bird's point levee in New Madrid, not a barge. I felt it too.

no it was a barge that hit the bridge it made my house shake and they blew the levee last night bridge is closed until they can inspect the damage which could be a while because the current is so fast in the river right now it will be very dangerous to send divers down to inspect it

You are correct it was blown last night. The first of three steps. Do a little research and you'd know that there are to be 3 explosions to open the entire floodway. The second explosion was carried out today around 12:30 at the lower part of the floodway. There is still one more section to be blown.

The I 155 Bridge is now being opened. And it was a levee being blown up earlier that shook all the homes. They blew up at levee @ New Madrid, Mo. about the same time the barge hit the bridge. But bridge has been found to be okay to travel now.

EMERGENCY NOTICE; A barge has hit the Mississippi River Bridge about 12:55pm on Tuesday. The Interstate 55 highway is closed to further traffice until an inspection can be made. Closed at the Dyersburg and Caruthersville entrance/exit ramps. Further information available later.
