My grandson, wife and 16 month old baby rent an apartment in Dyersburg. It takes everything they make to pay rent, utilities and buy food. The last two bills for water ONLY were $400.00. They have called the city and explained there is no way they could use that much water. Penny Rice told them there is nothing she can do other than take the sewage off...but only 3 times. They contacted the mayor who in turn brushed if off and told them it was up to Mike Morgan. Mike Morgan said he would replace the meter but that was weeks ago...and if the meter is 'bad' they would still have to pay the bill. The kids can't afford to move because they don't have enough money to pay another deposit. The landlord says he can't find a leak....someone please tell us what to do....this is sad that the city will take advantage of a young couple struggling to make a living.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I have dealt with Penny before, and to put it kindly, she needs to be fired and escorted out of city hall. Her threatening nature helps no one and is counter productive. Second of all, I hope and pray that the city of Dyersburg can see Mayor Holden for what he really is and take the appropriate action next time the election rolls around.
If they cannot afford the bill, walk across the street from city hall, go to Matthew 25:40, and explain the situation, they can help. They may send them around to the mission, salvation army, and other churches, but between all of them, your grandson and his family should get the money they nee4d to help with this bill. The money does not have to be paid back, it is a charitable organization.
Third, the leak. Most of the time when a water bill has gotten that high, it is because the flapper inside the tank of the toilet has rotted and does not seal properly causing the tank to continuously fill up. Check that. If it is inside the toilet tank, you can get a new one for a couple bucks and they are easy to install.

I thought the new mayor of Dyersburg was gonna make lots of changes and help out the town. Dont sound like it here. I am sorry to hear about the problem but I have no clue as to what you can do to get something done. I feel for your grandson and his family. I have two small children myself and I know its really hard right now with the economy in the situation its in. Please know I will pray that your family gets some help soon!!!!

yes, please tell us what apartments these are. I really hope your grandson gets the help that his family needs. Times are just awful now.

My family has also had to use Matthew 25:40 before...it is a great organization. They don't make anyone feel bad for needing help. But they can only help you out once or twice a year I think. But i can see where they have to make that rule.

seems like you have a leak somewhere, turn off everything and read meter, wait 10 minutes and see if it moved any?

Thank you, prayers DO help. I'm wondering if an alderman can help....if they care.

Which apts. behind the high school? If you are driving down Greenway towards the school, are they on the right or left? Name or description?

You need to call a qualified plumber to find what the problem is and send the bill to the landlord. It doesn't sound as if the landlord is being very helpful in this matter.

As far as the lack of help from everyone else this couple has contacted, it speaks for itself. No family with a small child should have to struggle like this and be turned away when they reach out for help.

Sounds like a load of bs if you ask me. Some of you suckers belive any crap that is printed on topix. Bullcrap - this post is bogus.

If this was true, the City and Mike Morgan would have checked the meter and replaced it, if it were bad; and they would have made an adjustment in the water bill.

This is why there will always be scams....cause suckers are born every minute.

Hey guest - I spoke with City officials and they stated that they had no knowledge about any complaints of a $400 water bill or a faulty meter as you described.

So Guest - let me ask two pointed questions -

#1 - did your grandson tell you this crap and you just assumed it to be true??? Did you give him any money? If so what did he use it for?

#2 - or did you just make this crap up to discredit the City cause you are gearing up for a run?????

what a bunch of suckers

You r right things like this do happen and people get suckered, but at the same time things like this does happen. That is what is one of the things that is wrong with America today they don't want to reach out and help people. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of people that are always with their hand out. My advice would be like the guy said in one of the other topics to go out check the meter, and see how much it has moved. I am sure if there is somrthing like that going on that the mayor would help with this situation. Don't Beg, Be Independent!

LOL, caught him on that one. I have had this exact same problem with the city before and the city will do exactly what the original poster said. They will NOT adjust the bill other than to remove the sewer charges, THAT'S IT. I have also dealt with Mike Morgan, and my dealings with him would have went the way of the original poster had I not continuously called him until he arrived to do his job. I see nothing false about this complaint whatsoever.

In fact, call ole Mike Morgan. He will tell you straight. Call Jeff Moore, who is in charge of the water department. Jeff is a elder at his church and you will not find a better man. His number is in the book.

Just call these people and they will answer any question you have.

Like I said, a sucker born every minute. Even Forrest Gump knew better.

That is true if the leak is on your side. But not true if the meter is defected. If the meter is bad, they will adjust your bill to the average previous months.

But if the leake is on your side, then you are responsbile, unless you rent. Then it would be the landlords, I believe. Maybe not.

Like another person said, a leaky toliet is the biggest casue of a high water bill. That is not the City, Mike Morgan, Obama, Superman or Batmans fault. It is the fault of the person who sits his lazey butt on it and does nothing to get it fixed.

i have had several dealings with the city water dept. and mike morgan.he has always checked problems out and if it was a problem on the city he would see it got took care of.more than likly it was a commode running.it happens all the time.a faulty meter is not going to be faulty one day and not the next.however a faulty can leak some days and not the next.i say check everything out before you run down the mayor or any city employee.

i have seen it a lot.flapper valve on commode bad,you flush the tank fills up and after you walk away or leave the water drains down and it fills up again.i bet if you check the previous tenants probably had a high bill.why is everyone wanting to blame the city mayor for this.most of the time when a water meter goes bad it just quits registering.a meter will not register unless water goes somewhere on the customer and that is just common sense.
