DCHS will do whatever it takes to get another graduate. They even fudged their outcome statistics to make them look like they were better than DHS. When you have to cheat to say you're better than a school that's not even top 20 in West Tennessee, that is pretty sad.

Any time a student does not graduate it is counted against the school's graduation rate that is scored on the state report card. If a school continually fails the report card or doesn't show improvement there is a risk of being taken over by the state. Graduation rate is only one area of the report card most deal with standard test scores. If a child transfers to another school such as Gateway that student will not count against the graduation rate. You can thank No Child Left behind or now Race to the Top for these regulations. A result of law makers who know nothing about education making policies that affect us all.

Too bad the parents didn't help that child to learn while at home. Parents just don't like to help out with homework anymore.

Why should i have to pay for her to go to gateway, when the the school has failed to do their job? Do you not realize how long it will take that child to catch up on what all she never learned. A whole hella lot! When the child was in 6 th grade she was only on a 4 th grade reading level. Just think how much she has missed out and that was being in reading recovery.. Sad right? But the lousy school pushed her on anyway! What a great awesome job they have done all these yrs, don cha think? I just thought it was time everyone know just how educated our teachers are with our children. So now you all know! Sad is what i think!
No child will ever catch up at Gateway! You should have addressed thus situation back years ago. Sorry your child has suffered but waiting years to address a problem was a mistake on the parents part.

Too many parents are demanding that their children receive straight A's even when they do none of the work. Otherwise the delicate little darlings might develop an inferiority complex. That's a big part of what is wrong with our nation today. The youth are raised with a sense of entitlement by their parents and expected good grades and great jobs to be handed to them on a silver platter.

I have to agree. But that law is not helping them students that need extra help. And they pushed her on to every class knowing she was not even doing the work. Something need to change about this. Im sure mine is not the only one they have did this to. Now this only means one thing that she really has no idea how to do the work, so how can they hand down a damn diploma if the child is not doing the work? That law should be changed not only for her, but for all the others they have done this way. This is the worse schooling i have ever seen. So the way i see it how these type kids going to hold down a job without the right education? The paper wont mean a thing in the world if the child don't know nothing!
At least you are not trying to her grammar!

It's hilarious how much y'all complain about something. Putting your problems on topix won't solve them, I promise. :) dyer co high school is one of the best schools around. I received a great education from there. I'm in college now. Your child must be stupid. Just saying.

Congratulations on failing to making certain that your child received an education. It's free. Their future depends upon it. However, it is a parent's duty to make certain that their child spends the first 22 years of their life focusing on nothing but their education and bettering themselves. Do whatever you need to do in order to get them a GED. Blame the school all you want, it is your failure as a parent and their future is destined to be on Government aid smashing out kids every year. You'll get another chance though on your family's future, while you are raising all of those grandkids and they are all still living with you at 30.

Yeah, it's sad. People, both children and adults, are all different. Suggesting that EVERYONE has the capacity to get a four year degree after high school is nonsense. Telling someone to "get an education" who couldn't do the work and couldn't afford it anyway is just stupid. Also, many people just don't want to spend another 4 years in school.

We need people to do all sorts of jobs. There's nothing wrong with factory work, construction, fast food, etc. There's honor in work. Everyone cannot go to college. Even if it was completely free our nation doesn't have the capacity to send everyone to college.

Too bad DCHS did not have a class on profanity. You could have helped her with her home work and she would have had at least one A on her report card. The schools can never win in situations like this. If they had failed her and held her back a year here and there, you would have been on topix blabbering about how they wronged your child. Take some responsibility for your child. It is not up to the State to do anything but provide the schools and teachers for the children. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink! You can take a child to school, but you can't make him think!

Well put. People expect teachers to raise their kids nowadays and blame the teachers when they fail as parents.

It's also free if you can throw a ball well. So what? That has nothing to do with the original point. Not everyone is destined for college. Some kids just aren't going to finish high school. Forcing them to be there is worse than just letting them leave and get a GED.

I graduated DHS and it was a farce. College was a joke as well. You could have condensed all 4 years of high school into 6 months (probably less) of focused education. It was a waste of my time. The way we educate in the U.S. is ridiculous.

Having a degree doesn't mean you know anything. What it means is you found a way to pay for school and you showed up most of the time.

Well " oh brother" Lets see i believe she was held back a while ago in grammer School. I believe they knew she could not do it in her early years. But like i said they kept sending her on after that, knowing all along that the child could not do it. And yes we did fight back and forth with the Schools all of them to get her more help. And the only damn thing they wanted to do is throw her in title one as they call it.. I call it bullshit! She never missed any School always there. Because she loved being in there. She just didn't understand the work. She has what they call a very slow learner and had AD/HD so there for it made it very hard for her to understand the work. It's not us as parents not helping her, " Because we tried " It is however how the "Teachers was teaching it". She just could not do the work. So don't go blaming the parent when you have no idea what we really had to go through about this. I was just letting others know that the DCHS does have waviers for this, but will not use them. And from what i have been told by the juvenile court it is our rights if u have a child with these type problems. The only thing is we have to fight for it. By the time we go through all that bs she will be 18 yrs old in just months away. So i think it's bs. If we was parents who did not care i would not go threw the effort to try and get something done! Or come on this gossip sht to warn other parents of the rights we all have. So is that plain enough to you?
Then send her to school till she is 18 and then let her go get the GED. It is not a walk in the park either. If she cant do the work at school, in all probability, she will not be able to pass a GED. Good luck with whatever you decide, u there are a lot of young men and women who do rather well in our school system. I would like to see some stats that reflect a 50% drop out rate. Can't believe that one.

You are no more important than the person who picks up your trash regardless of what you believe. You should remember that.
