Does anyone know anything about Terry Fowler dba Economy Builders? I've heard good but more bad about him. Thinking about hiring him until recent comments.

I don't know what type of work you're needing but a word of caution...be very careful of contractors in this town. Now I cannot speak about Terry Fowler since I have no firsthand knowledge of him but...

We have lived all over and I have never experienced such unprofessional, unreliable and dishonest contractors as I have in Dyersburg.

I'm not saying they are all like that. Just that most of the ones we've had the displeasure of dealing with over the last 15 years has been.

Don't be fooled by a "family" name/business that's been around a long time either. The ones that badmouth their competition and claim they are the only ones that will do you right are the first ones you need to RUN AWAY from because they will be the first ones to royally mess you up and then refuse to stand behind their work and refuse to return for a promised service call.

Do your research and talk to everyone you can then check with BBB, the Chamber and anyone else you can think of before you hire anyone around here.

Sounds like a lot of work but it will save you $$$ and a lot of grief later on. We thought we had picked good people, in part, because of their "good name" and being lulled into a false sense of community in a small town where we believed decent contractors still existed.

Good luck to you.

I too have experienced the contractors that do half the job and leave.
It seems that everyone I have hired has done the same.

He has filed bankruptcy several times and does not pay his bills, I know from experience. I don't know what kind of work he does, but if he stiffs people on their accounts he can't be honest.

You have to be careful about getting someone from memphis or jackson. Lots of times they just contract the work out to someone local. I know a guy who does that. And one of the reasons he has his own business is so he doesn't have to pass a drug test.

i know some people in newbern that were ripped off by Terry Fowler, he didn't finish the job, I think they are just now getting there house finished on there remodeling job. he started in 2006 and they had to hire someone else to finish the work in 2008. they also had trouble with their electrician Fix All they are crooks too. they never finished their work and what they did do they didn't do correctly and had to be redone. So I wouldn't hire Terry Fowler or Fix All for anything.

Listing the dishonest contractors would help everyone out and if there's any trustworthy ones left over in Dyersburg, we could hire them.

If only there was a free, anonymous, public forum for us to do that in :)

I suggest asking for references. I used a real good one this year but do not want to put the name on here. However if they gave my name to a prospective customer I would be glad to talk to them. And yes, there are still good contractors in Dyersburg. However, they do stay busy.

"Honest guy", I heard the same thing about the people in Newbern and I also heard of others in Missouri who got ripped off by him. IF he has a license, it should be taken from him!

I certainly appreciate all of your opinions and suggestions. I believe I will shop around and not hire a loser.

I love this web site!

I WOULD SUGGEST CALLING YOUR LOCAL BUILDING SUPPLIERS SUCH AS FORCUM LANNOM, RIGGS SUPPLY, SHERWINN WILLIAMS,ETC. IT IS TO THEIR BENEFIT TO RECOMMEND A CONTRACTOR THAT IS RELIABLE. FURTHERMORE, THEY KNOW WHO IS PROFESSIONAL AND PAYS THEIR BILLS ON TIME. BE SURE YOUR CONTRACTOR IS LICENSED, CARRIES WORKERS COMP AND LIABILITY INSURANCE. BEING A MEMBER OF THE LOCAL HOMEBUILDERS ASSOCIATION WOULD BE A PLUS ALSO

I just want to add, don't be afraid to get mean if you have too. You are paying for a service and you should demand that service. I have thrown guys off of a site before because they were drunk, high, or just plan sitting around when I expected them to be working. If I am paying a contractor to work for me, I expect them top be on site WORKING, at 7:30 am, and to put in an 8 hour day. I had a few that wanted to stroll in at about 9 am and work until 2:45 pm, with an hours lunch. You can imagine my anger when I found out these guys were being paid for an 8 hour day, and I was the one paying for it. Don't hesitate to call out the general contractor, I did. Get a contract.
