Shell's Kulluk oil rig is ready for action in the Arctic. If Dutch Royal Shell gets permission to sink an exploratory well next summer in the Beaufort Sea, which lies north of Alaska and east along the curve of land that begins at Point Barrow, the company's Noble Discoverer drillship will depart for the site from Unalaska Island in June.
