A lot of those immigrants by passed the statue of liberty, came via the Rio Grande. took a short cut on the way up here. they saved gas and mileage. A smart thing to do. even saved some money by by passing the statue.

And they would not be here but people use the excuse to hire them by going through a subtractor. thats at least what Lou Dobbs said he done, he was not responsible for the hiring of ILLEGALS, the contractor is. Do you think the manufacturing plants and the road builders use that excuse to import labor through sub contracting.

I am all for it, if I went to live in another country are they going to accommodate me with an interpreter for the rest of my life?
Actually you wouldn't need an interpreter since you would find an abundance of English speakers in just about every country you travel too. Though some how I doubt someone as ignorant as you appear to be will be traveling much!

American high school students are already among the most POORLY educated in the civilized would. Should the next step be outlawing TEACHING a second language?

We are hosting two Japaneses exchange students. Both girls speak, read and write English very well. One of them speaks English AND French.

The answer lies somewhere in the middle. English, French and German are the international languages of commerece with Mandarin and Cantonese up and coming. Perhaps the problem could be solved somewhat by teaching our children at a younger age more than one language. My Russian son has learned, French, English some Spanish and German and works for an International bank in London, and it all started in Ketchum, Oklahoma when I was a child and saw that opportunity started with diversity!

Your an idiot! Don't be hating because you have issues with YOUR ancestors way of handling things way back when! This issue is about current America! Speak English or learn, simple!!<quoted text>
My point is IDIOT! that people only do things, when it is beneficiary to them. The government doesn't care if they learn to speak english, all they worry about are lawsuits, and saving their own asses. Maybe immigrants want to learn to speak english, hell for all we know they probably try their hardest, some may be slow learners. All I'm saying is people are suppose to help their fellow man, not make things more difficult. I bet your opinion would be different if you were in their shoes. Everyone deserves a better way of life, and language should not be a barrier.

We speak "American English"...

Apparently this "American English" you speak of does not include understanding the use capitalization or punctuation. Apparently, it does not include basic computer literacy either. God help us!

Who cares, this isn't Texas or Mexico, it's Oklahoma. In Oklahoma we speak English! Vote yes and make English the official language of the state.

And by the way, even with these basic corrections, this paragraph STILL sucks! The average sixth grader should have the skills to construct better sentences. And should also be able to string them together into a far more cohesive finished paragraph:

Who care? This isn't Texas or Mexico, it's Oklahoma and here in Oklahoma we speak ENGLISH! Please do your part to make English our state's official language by voting YES on the "English is the Official Language of Oklahoma Act". Thank you!

God knows I an the first to admit that I am not the world's best typist and my spelling need some work too!

But seriously, doesn't it even occur to any of you that it's pretty hard for people to take your opinions seriously when you give them by posting these semi-illiterate rants?

For one thing you keyboards feature all sorts of PUNCTUATION options! And also, you are sitting in front of a technological marvel. Please take advantage of it's features by (at least) using the spell check!

UM...Someone who is so illiterate that he just called the language he speaks "American English" is going be able to VOTE in an election. Shouldn't I be as entitled to (occasional) post that I get sick of reading these hillbilly posts that are so shamefully ignorant that they make my eyes bleed?

FREE Adult literacy classes are available in lcations all over the state of Oklahoma. There is NO excuse for being ignorant.

How many do we translate now? This law is about exclusion. Let it pass and how long until there is a minimum English literacy requirement. That would serve you rednecks right.

Look at you throwing around "leftist" ideas like minimal literacy requirements! Thinking like this will endanger our status as the stupidest country in the first world, next thing you know people will start rading and THAT could lead to independent thinking and the next thing you know "red necks" will become an endangered culture...yikes!

Seriously, English is our national language! So isn't it about time some of you learned how to read and write above the 5th grade level?

There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for being an ignorant white person!

ADULT LITERACY classes are FREE and available in locations all over the country.

the official language of any state should be the language that the majority of people read, speak, write and understand. its easy to spot the idiots on this subject, the ones trying to make a common sense issue into a racial issue.

Is this really that big of a problem? This seems to me something put on the ballot to get out the right wing conservative vote - just as gay marriage was a few years back on a more national level. What next, official hairstyle, or official clothing, or maybe official style of home or vehicle. In the not too distant future, whites will likely be a minority in this country. How about we just make tolerance the official motto of Oklahoma.

All this bill says is the state will not be required to publish things in English and Spanish. They will only do business in English.

If you want to deal with a state office you will have to learn English. This is the same thing 99% of other countries do when dealing with state offices,(not including embassies or federal offices).

It doesn't mean you have to speak English or do business in English unless your business is with the state.

If this is racist then the whole world is racist.

When I traveled abroad a few years ago, I picked up enough German to get by most countries..."most countries", most people in Europe speak two or three languages, even more. They are diversified because they travel around more than we travel abroad. There are only four true languages spoke in the entire Western Hemisphere, English, French, Portugese and Spanish. But the majority of people speak just their native language. In Europe thay thought of Americans as eccentric and snobbish because even on their turf, WE demanded people speak English other than US speak their laguage. Think how many Americans travel abroad, get it yet? There are places in south Texas where German can be heard on the streets from generations born & raised there. Same with Spanish, generations never living further than 100 miles of where they were born, AMERICANS one and all. So if your way of thinking is that, why in the Gulf are there places we frquent turning the population from 100 Americans for every local, why aren't those people all speaking the laguage of the homeland? I know a few right here in Oklahoma whose grandparents don't speak English, just the native tongue of their people, do they need to "go home" or do we????
Having spent some time in Europe myself, I know this to be true. They learn languages from the moment they start school, and the choice of which language to learn is left to the student. I am Native, But I disagree with the whole walk the trail crutch thing. We lost the war, now excel in the dominant culture. Rather than cry about what happened 200 years ago, use this cultures rules and ways to advance the Native culture by creating awareness and educating the ignorant to help dispell the hatred that seethes in our local communities. With education comes understanding, and this understanding leads to the awareness of the beauty of each others culture. This is not limited to the cultures of the Indigenous peoples, but extends to the cultures of all Americans. We means the unity to support one another, not based on ethnic background, but based on the simple fact that we are all the HUMAN RACE.

Aren't the black people allowed to speak thier "language", so whats the difference.
Government documents do not have to be printed in Eubonics. that is the difference. That is what we are trying to do here with saying no. I hate no-one. But our state is poor. If we have to spend money to have documents and translators for other language..what is going to suffer? our transportation department? Roads are pretty bad as they are.. Or maybe our schools could stand to lose the money... there are no jobs here anyway so why do we need to educate these children?

Where is the money going to come from to pay for another language other than English?

We as Oklahomans have to stop the state from STUPID spending. this is one way. the other way is to stop any programs that invade the right to privacy of others.. That would save some money. We CANNOT afford to cater to people. Thats all there is to it.
