My mom's side of the family were Germans, all. When they immigrated here, the rule was they could speak either German or English in the home. Outside the home, they all had to learn and use only English. Dad's side were Scotch-Irish-they learned English as soon as possible. I learned a language other than English when I was growing up. I had to learn a third language recently because of my job. I didn't really want to but I wanted to be functional in my job so I did it. Do I think in those languages and speak like a native? No. But I can make myself understood. If I can do it, anyone can. I do not believe America owes it to immigrants to do everything in multiple languages. I am sick of having to push "1" for English or "2" for Spanish. English should be the rule, not the exception. Period.

So it sounds like your real fear is having to learn another language yourself? Yet that fear doesn't translate into empathy for your fellow Americans that might not speak English, for whatever reason. Are you truly unable to see your hypocrisy?

Your an idiot! Don't be hating because you have issues with YOUR ancestors way of handling things way back when! This issue is about current America! Speak English or learn, simple!!

This is ridiculous! So what does it mean? If this passes and comes into affect, people that don't speak english are gonna be ignored? So if there were a major vehicular collision, and there were an english speaking person, and a non-english speaking person involved the one that does'nt speak english, gets kicked to the curb??? and left to die? What the hell?? This is a crap attitude! The Native americans did'nt enforce this bull on the whites, when they floated over here. I don't care who lives in this country, it went to crap, the day the whites came.

To me this is a cost issue. What is the cost of having to print all government documents in several different languages. how much does it cost the state to employ translaters for those other languages. consider other states where government documents have to be printed in atleast 2 languages.. How much money are they losing by doing so?

Its a cost issue, as a state we cannot afford to be having to print and translate in several different languages.

Hey Lefty, quit evading the real issues. Do you have a clue how many languages are out there? We can't possibly translate everything into even one foreign language, much less all of them.

Here's another question that I am embarrassed to admit I don't know the answer to. What does it say in the constitution? Does it say anything about changing America's way of doing things to fit everyone's idea of right?

P.S. By the way, we immigrated here to get away from the Nazis, so there!

You want everyone to speak English, but you sure don't hesitate to sell to non speaking people and take their money. The Indians are always talking about rights, go back to speaking Cherokee, whoops forgot you never learned how. Just walk the walk, not talk the talk.

English is the "official" language of CA, but unofficially it's Spanish. Sounds like it is spreading out to your state too.

leetotheroy has it right. People are free to provide their own interpreters. There was a case right here in Oklahoma last year (or maybe early this year) where a couple who spoke only some obscure Iranian language tried to sue for a drivers test in their native language.

If (when) this law passes, all official State business will be conducted in English, EXCEPT WHEN OVER RULED BY FEDERAL LAW, which means legal services and emergency medical care.

Several States already have this law on their books and English is the official language of Air Traffic Control around the world. All pilots must understand and speak English.

How many do we translate now? This law is about exclusion. Let it pass and how long until there is a minimum English literacy requirement. That would serve you rednecks right.

I am Choctaw but never learned the language. My grandfathers grandmother walked the Trail of Tears from Mississippi in the winter of 1832. My grandfather was sent to a government boarding school and punished for speaking his native language; so was his 13 children.

Maybe we should intern all immigrants and force them to learn English before they are turned loose in our society.

When I traveled abroad a few years ago, I picked up enough German to get by most countries..."most countries", most people in Europe speak two or three languages, even more. They are diversified because they travel around more than we travel abroad. There are only four true languages spoke in the entire Western Hemisphere, English, French, Portugese and Spanish. But the majority of people speak just their native language. In Europe thay thought of Americans as eccentric and snobbish because even on their turf, WE demanded people speak English other than US speak their laguage. Think how many Americans travel abroad, get it yet? There are places in south Texas where German can be heard on the streets from generations born & raised there. Same with Spanish, generations never living further than 100 miles of where they were born, AMERICANS one and all. So if your way of thinking is that, why in the Gulf are there places we frquent turning the population from 100 Americans for every local, why aren't those people all speaking the laguage of the homeland? I know a few right here in Oklahoma whose grandparents don't speak English, just the native tongue of their people, do they need to "go home" or do we????
