I took my basic training in 1971 at North Fort Lewis housed in the old wooden barracks. I was in C-2-2, 4th platoon, 4th squad. Trainee Carter marched right behind me and I remember his name because he yelled out cadence so loud that it hurt my ears. I had AIT, infantry, at Main Fort Lewis in Delta 3-3. I wonder where all of those guys I trained with are today.

Uncle Sam called on me, May 4th, 1971 arrived at Fort Lewis.A-4-1-. On to Ft Gordon Ga., Military Police training. Had knee surgery and was switched to communication. Was in Nam from November 1971 till November 1972. Discharged in April of 1972. Totally enjoyed my training at Ft. Lewis. I believe it made a different person out of me. Became a Police Officer w hen I returned back to the mid-west, for 32 years.

I was an ER in Feb 1970. Did my Basic training in C-3-2. Head DI was Sgt Macon, the only African American I ever met without a sense of rhythm. Because I could sing he promoted me to senior trainee so I could call cadence. Two weeks in I caught pneumonia and spent two months in Madigan General hospital. Macon held me out an extra week so he could start me over with his new cycle. Only good thing was I didn't have to pull kp or guard duty. I remember our pay was $99 a month but I got an extra $100 (25 per week)for helping the chaplin with Sunday services.

I did basic and AIT at Fort Lewis from March 10 1970 till sometime in the summer. My basic company was C-3-2. I was a NG from Tennessee. Turns out there about 10 of us NG's from Tennessee. The DI's treated us the same as the enlisted and RA's. They called us ridge runners and asked if people in Tennessee had shoes. I think they were kidding but who knows. I remember the chow lines, they always made the NG's go to the front of the line, we had to sign a different roster. I didn't like that but no one held it against us. My other memories are rain and Mt Rainer. iI hope to visit that area again sometime.

I went through basic training at Ft. Lewis Feb 11 through April 16, 1970. I was in A-2-1 (Company A,2nd Bn, 1st Combat Infantry Brigade. Most of the guys all went 11-B infantry to Vietnam, and I went to Germany, after training at Ft. Sill in Honest John Rocket Crewman tng. Drill Sgt at Ft. Lewis was Johnny Baugh.
I also went through basic at Ft Lewis from April 23,1970 through the first of July. I was also in A-2-1, 4th platoon, 4th squad. Our Drill Sergeants were Drill Sergeant Johnny Baugh and Drill Sergeant Gilbert. I don't think Gilbert had a first name, his mother just named him Drill Sergeant Gilbert. Both were hard but fair. We lucked out and hit the only time of year it didn't rain every day. Most of the US guys were assigned as 11-B's. Me and several other guys were sent to Ft Sam Houston for medic training. As soon as the plane landed and we transferred to a bus, we were told our assighments had changed and we were now 11-B's and were headed to Ft Polk. oh well. I oftem think about Baugh and Gilbert. We were Baugh's last training cycle and he was going to OCS for officer training.

Basic Training from middle of July (7/15?)to middle of Sept 1968.C-3-1 as I remember. Then to AIT at Ft. Ord, CA till middle of Nov. Assignment was with 7th Admin Co,7th Inf Div, Camp Casey, Korea. Nothing special as far as exposed to any outstanding leaders except maybe AIT DI who only baby sat we typist. At least he was always fair. Basic DI was court martialed just before graduation for "borrowing" money from our cadre. Not a bad guy and had been wounded in Nam but our ROTC lieuy was going to make an example of him. Then the CO left for Nam. Maybe grew up while there.

I also was in C-2-2 early in 1970. I was in 4th platoon, 4th squad. My platoon leader was a former Navy man and after doing his time there he joined the Army. We had a lot of US's, Regulars, AR's and NG's in our company.

Hello, I was in 2nd plt, B-4-2 from June 71 till Sept 71, for basic, then across the field for Infantry AIT, sure dont't remember any of the AIT #'s for the unit I was with in AIT! I'm always glad to say the I had basic at Ft. Lewis, believe ith or not, I had a lot of fun there, once we made it to AIT we had the weekends off, learned how to hitch hike to Portland. Next off to Benning for Jump school, then on to Korea, still remember the enlisted mans club, checking out a turntable and listening to CRR's Willie and the Poor boys! Everybody here in Nebraska had to go to Ft. Leonardwood MO, did not want to go there!

I am a basic training graduate of C 2 2 in in May of 1970. Forgot what exactly C 2 2 was, but it was on my fatigues at the time along with US Army and my name Olson. Had a chance to drive thru the base again in 1989, I believe, while on vacation in the northwest. After basic, I went to Ft. Ord, CA for clerical school and on to Ft. Devens, Mass. for the rest of my 2 years. I have fond memories of the military. It was a place where I really became a man, had a chance to travel and was still lucky enough to serve in the continental US.
I was at Fort Lewis for basic, graduated May, 1970. I was in A 4 1. I believe we were in the same large area shared by companies A, B, C, D. I was the pace setter for all of our travels, since I marched the right corner as a squad leader of A company. We did lots of stuff together, even though we didn't know each other. I can never forget the rain and the hard training being wet most of the time.
I was also lucky enough to serve (as regular army), two years, all in the U.S. Vietnam eluded us, but not most of our brothers.
Thanks for serving buddy.

I arrived on 8 Feb 1970.I took basic training at Ft Lewis and my Drill Sgt was Boykins. I was in 3Plt C Company 1 BN 1 BDE. If any one knows someone from that company please contact me.
I was in the training unit right before you, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade also 3rd platoon with Drill Sergeant Boykin. That was an experience i will always remember. Boykin was a fair DI. I got my hair cut before leaving for boot camp, but it wasn't enough. Boykin stood beside the barber chair and made sure my hair got a special treament. I notice you have his name as Boykins with an S. It has been 44 years and I was lucky to remember what I did.
