Bridge opening

Waterloo, IL

#1 Jul 22, 2012
Has anyone heard if the bridge is going to open by Labor Day? It should would be great to have it open. North Dupo is so backed up all the time. The trains really get you too. Love trains but when you got to wait on them all the time you get tired of them. I realize I live in a railroad town but sill at times they can be annoying. Give me your comments if you know any information.

My hubby's friend that will be working on it told me last week that they are still hoping to have it done by October.

That was the original dead line on finishing the bridge so that's what people need to count on. Another year or maybe a little less depending on the weather.

From the Republic-Times:

Canal Bridge opening soon

The new Canal Bridge on Route 3 between Dupo and Cahokia is set for an unofficial opening of Nov. 15, an Illinois Department of Transportation official told the Republic-Times on Wednesday.

"We're all but certain it will be open by Thanksgiving," said Thomas Borsch of IDOT.

The road has been closed at that location since August 2011, causing many motorists traveling to downtown St. Louis from Monroe County, Dupo and surrounding areas to use a detour or other alternate route. The road was expected to be closed until August of next year, but Borsch said workers from Keeley & Sons had fortunate weather conditions to speed up the project.

"We really got lucky because last winter really wasn't a winter, and spring didn't cause the canal to flood. So it was pretty ideal on both counts," Borsch said.

Borsch said the only main hurdle remaining on the project is the pouring of barrier walls on the new bridge.

The old Canal Bridge, built in the 1950s, was rated “structurally deficient” in 2009. Cost of the construction project for the new bridge was around $14.5 million.

They are milking the job as long as they can. In most states they can put up a bridge in less than a year doesn't take them years to complete a project unless it's a big project such as Poplar Street Bridge or JB bridge.WTH

Always a negative person. Maybe you should have done the bridge.

The bridge is being completed nearly a year ahead of schedule. I'm surprised but I think that's great.

These types of jobs are bid on a daily progress agreement. The companies are required to only get so much done per mile, per day. Getting them done earlier than projected earns them a bonus, you dumbfck.

In this case the contractor will get a bonus for having the job done early. Could you imagine how quickly that could have been completed if the rail road would have co-operated on tearing down the old bridge?
At any rate, I'm sure everyone in this area will be glad to se it open again.
