Noticed a memorial at Dupo High School with 3 girls pictures on it, just curious what happened to them.

my dad told me it was a car accident I think when he was in school or had been close to when he was in school. he graduated Dupo in 1975, so I guess around then.

No it wasn't in 1975, if we are talking about the same thing. The girls were going to an awards ceremony in Columbia. A car hit them from behind and their gas tank exploded. The girls were unable to get out of the car. It was a tragedy the whole town mourned. I know it wasn't as long ago as 1975 but I'm not sure when it happened. I think within the last 10 or 15 years

They were killed in August of 1988, just a few months after graduating. They were rear-ended going south on rt. 3 in Columbia, right about where the Quarry/Palmer Rd. interchange is now. The car they were riding in had a trailer hitch, and it punctured the gas tank. Robin and Pam may have been killed instantly from the impact, but Carlis unfortunatlely most likely burned to death. Hard to believe the 20th anniversary is 2 months away.

It was a terrible terrible tragedy. Everyone in town was so sad and heartbroken. I'll be thinking about their families this summer.

Yes, it was a terrible time for all of Dupo. It was very sad. The person that hit them was drinking and had prior drinking charges but did not get in trouble because his dad was a judge. They were 3 happy girls going to pick money up from one of their mom's work in Columbia to go out to eat on a Friday night. Then some idiot took their lives. I am sure he does not know it will be 20 years on August 12.

Carlis McFarland, Robin Qualls and Pam Martin. Yes they were 17 and 18. Their pictures used to be on the memorial.

I remember when this happened, they had all just graduated from high school in the spring, it was so sad. I have never even till this day seen such a huge funeral. They had it at the high school gym. I knew all 3 girls they were so sweet, it was just a huge tragedy for the community.

The girls (not sure if all) were planning on going to Hickey college, that's probably where you got that.....

It sure was - they were all beautiful girls! Robin and I grew up together. We lived on the same street all of our lives. It was a tragic loss. It is definitely hard to believe that it has been 20 years.
