I beleive that Mr. Dell puts in more than the time missed on a few ambulance calls. Besides as a community service what would you rather have a person tied to a job he can't leave or pick you up when you are having a heart attack.

I am grateful to Ron for the time I called EMS as my 3 year old went into anaphylactic shock after a severe reaction to antibiotics. I have no idea if he left the school that day or not, nor did I care. My only concern was getting my daughter the emergency help she needed and quickly and that is what I received. My friend in Dupo has also had to utilize the EMS twice this year as her infant son has epilepsy and thank God Ron was available to them quickly as well as he was in a full blown seizure both times. When it comes time for your family member needing emergency help I am sure you won't care where the help is coming from as long as it gets there. So jeb, think again about what you are wishing for and be thankful Ron is out there willing to be where he is needed the most. What do you contribute to the community?

Lets see.....work on a school maintenance project...or possibly save a life. Do you have any knowledge on how to save a life Jeb?. With your grammar skills, I'm assuming not. Thank God for these guys that drop everything to assist in true times of need. When my wife hemmoraged at home, she could have bled to death if it wasn't for these guys. Some day when you have a life threatening event rock your little world, maybe all these guys should just stay at work. To think you might have been saved. Tough break. You must think that these guys just sit around and wait for emergency calls? Most have jobs to pay the bills. My thanks to the School Board or any employer that allows these guys to go do their thing. From the looks of the posts here, maybe you should rag on something else.

Thank God we have people like Ron Dell, who are willing to help in this community! A few years back he was on call an came when my husband needed an ambulance. You may need help someday and you better hope there is someone who will come to your aid. Not everyone is willing to take the training and step up to the plate like our EMTs and Firemen.

Did you ever think that maybe he goes on those calls cause there is no one else to take the call cause there at work? I know if I needed an ambulance I would want him over anyone else Dupo has working on their EMS anyway.

A lot of days, if it wasn't for Ron being able to leave to go on the ambulance call, you would have had to wait longer for the call to go through either columbia or medstar. Which in return, someone COULD lose their life. During the day, a lot of times, he is the only medic here in town. On the ambulance, you need an emt and a medic to get the ambulance out the door. So be grateful that the school allows him to go on the ambulance call to save a life. You just need to get over yourself and be grateful of what you do have.

Gov. Blagojevich signs Volunteer Firefighter Job Protection Act
New law protects jobs of volunteer firefighters who are late or miss work while responding to emergency

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich today signed legislation that ensures volunteer firefighters won’t lose their paying jobs simply because they were late or missed work while performing their duties.

“In many communities around Illinois, volunteer firefighters are our frontline first responders, the ones local residents depend on to fight their fires and perform life-saving emergency medical services,” Gov. Blagojevich said.“But most of these volunteers also work paying jobs to provide for their families. They shouldn’t have to worry about losing their jobs simply because they’re providing a critical public service.”

House Bill 4851, sponsored by Rep. Mike Boland (D-Moline) and Sen. Gary Forby (D-Benton), creates the Volunteer Firefighter Job Protection Act. The new law says employers of volunteer firefighters in communities with 3,500 people or less cannot dismiss the firefighter for being late or absent to work because he or she was responding to an emergency that occurred prior to the start of the workday. A volunteer firefighter who is terminated in violation of the Act may bring a civil action against the employer by seeking reinstatement to the position, payment of back wages and reinstatement of fringe benefits and seniority rights.

"The people we rely upon who volunteer to protect our communities shouldn't have to worry about losing their job if they go to help put out a fire. These individuals give of their time and put their lives on the line to protect all of us. This law is the right thing to do to help those who are potentially making the ultimate sacrifice for our communities," said Senator Forby.

“Volunteer firefighters are an important part of the fire services, but it can often be difficult to recruit and retain them because of obstacles such as this,” said State Fire Marshal J.T. Somer.“Steps like this that help them protect their financial livelihood while serving their communities should encourage more volunteers to stay on, and benefit everyone in the community.”

"The Governor signing HB 4851 will help to attract and retain volunteer fire fighters who are so crucial to our rural communities,” said Rep. Boland.“No volunteer fire fighter risking his or her life responding to a fire or emergency call should ever have to worry about being fired because they are late or miss work due to their response."

HB 4851 is effective immediately.

If he has this agreement with his employer then I don't see where it is the business of anyone else. Obviously his employer is ok with it. Plus, it's not like he doesn't put in extra time anyway. I mean seriously, let's stone the guy for HELPING the community!

These guys just don't seem to get it. It seems that Jeb and Dupo Fan would prefer that people in need of immediate medical assistance just take their chances with an ambulance and emergency room. I would prefer the help provided by these guys, and girls, when minutes count. Maybe one of these days they will need one of these life savers and they won't be available. Then they might understand.

Isn't Dupo's ambulance service volunteer? And if it is, don't you think all of these people have jobs?
