FLASHBACK: Romney Acknowledged His Massachusetts Healthcare Plan Imposed A Tax

In what is now a well-known exchange from ABC News’ January 2008 Republican presidential debate at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, Mitt Romney declared “I like mandates” when asked by moderator Charlie Gibson about his approach to health care reform in Massachusetts.

But there’s another moment from the debate that’s getting more traction after yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling — on in which Romney says “yes,” when asked is the health reform law he ushered in as governor constituted a tax.

GIBSON:”Governor … you imposed tax penalties in Massachusetts?”

ROMNEY:”Yes, we said, look, if people can afford to buy it, either buy the insurance or pay your own way; don’t be free-riders.”

“Romney has made deceptive attacks on the President’s health care law a central part of his stump,” said Bill Burton, the head of the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA in response to the 2008 debate clip,“but just a few years ago Romney bragged about the big tax penalty in his health care plan.

each state cannot have their own health plan it's like gun permits some would not have reciprocity if you went traveling , places would say sorry we dont honor Mass. then your SOL and if they offer reciprocity you may as well have it federal (like they want to do wiith gun permits ) I can't wait till they debate the heathcare issue booyah !! 50 states with different policies yeah right. Very confusing .

You think it would be better for employers to have to deal with 50 different health care laws?

They aren't actually considering the details of the law, they just know that Obama wants it, so it must be bad. Their intellectually dishonest death cult cannot die off fast enough. Opt out of healthcare altogether, idiots. Just pray on it, and leave modern medicine to those of us who want to live in a healthy modern society. They don't like the captain, and they're psychotic enough to sink the whole ship just to drown him.

By the way, can any of you republicans show us where your taxes are going up if you already have health insurance? Please cite actual law, not some nutbag right wing blog. Or, are you freeloaders who are pissed that you'll have to pony up some cash for your health care?

I know you are not an idiot! Where do u think the money is going to come from? Nothing is free, someone is going to have to pay! There isn't enough 1 percenters to pay for this even if you talk all their money. For the record the scotus said it was a tax! Get ready all you socialist, someone will pay and it will start with you!

Where's the money going to come from?!? Are you kidding me? You guys were all complaining about poor people not paying enough income taxes, with ZERO regard for where THAT money would come from. During the discussions about the Occupy movement, you all wanted everyone to get some skin in the game. This is a perfect, irrefutable example of how demented your party has become.

Bills that have been supported by republicans for years got bundled together and passed. That bundle is exactly like one passed by the republican candidate for the presidency. The only remaining reason for you all to be so rabid in your opposition, is that it was passed by Barack Obama.

And, stop slinging the word "socialist" around. You clearly don't know what it means.

most of support the poor but we want them to also start to help themselves! Obama and the dems had 2 years of control and chose not to do anything! We all need to realize these pules in office don't care about us! When these people were occupying businesses they were all at the wrong place, the policy makers are the problem these companies are doing everything legal, and employeeing millions of people who pay taxes

Why didn't the Republicans fix welfare when they controlled the White House, House of Representatives, and the Senate? Obama hasn't changed the system. There are more people receiving benefits, because there are more people eligible in a poor economy. Don't change the subject by blaming the economy on Obama, either. We're talking about the welfare system and your vague argument that people receiving assistance need to "start helping themselves." I also find it ironic that the same people who claim that all these people on welfare could work if they wanted to (which assumes that there are jobs available for them), also criticize Obama for there not being more jobs available. Well, which is it?

I Judy drove from Florida to mass. Many stores and gas stations have foreigners working them, all the hotels had immigrants working, all the roadside stands had foreigners. I actually mentioned this one of the guys pumping gas in NJ, he said Americans won't do these jobs! There are jobs it depends if you think you are to good or to smart! If you want to work you'll find a job! Good job? No! It's a Job and it's always easier to find a job when you have one! Americans need to man up and go to work and stop crying! There are more people collecting under Obama, that makes you proud! Socialism at its finest! No new taxes the scotus said the health care bill is tax! 50 percent don't pay!

From your roadside survey, it sounds like we can conclude that the economy is just fine. The problem is that we have 12 million people who are just too lazy to go out and get jobs. I'm trying to understand how that's the President's fault.

My survey doesn't mean shit but either does the liberal crying! There are jobs out there if you want to work, the question is why didn't you get hired? Long hair, tattoos, Shitty attitude, no education, can't read or right, or I won't do that job, who do you think I am? It's all in the attitude, 12 million illegals in this country that can find jobs! Wake up Clyde stop making excuses for the lazy people your socialism is showing! No excuse you want to eat get a job!

So, if a person can't read and write, even though they tried to learn, and they can't find work as a result, they should starve?

Then Clyde is right the economy is good as there are plenty of jobs for those who wish to work, You just stated that, good job Mr Obama! it is not Obama's fault if people are lazy it's the Parents or lack there of who are to blame. congrats to you family, some kids are not as lucky and are born into a shit hole and have to make do.
this might be of interest to clyde from another discussion, this is why we need government to oversee big business or they will run amuck, Note the company, the white house isn't the only entity f-ing up. hope this makes sense.

Yeah! Screw those poor kids! They want to eat, they can get a factory job! Can't read? Can't do math? Too bad! We wanted to make sure that those greedy overpaid teachers finally got put in their place after trashing our economy, so no books for you! Grab a shovel and get to work! Health problems from poor nutrition? Tough, kid. We didn't like the mean black lady suggesting you eat some damned broccoli instead of another fistful of deep fried crap! Well, it's not that we didn't like the broccoli, it's that we can't agree with the 1st Lady... she's the enemy! It's more important to win elections by acting like petulant 4th graders than doing what's right for our citizens!

You are a bunch of sociopaths.

And you have a problem detecting sarcasm that pokes fun at the total disconnect between reality and every republican position on anything that provides any kind of assistance to the poor.

All poor people are lazy?

You have a very high opinion of a certain person today, believing that they can do no wrong. But how realistic are you being? It looks as though you're viewing the world through rose-colored glasses, which is fine if it's only a temporary state but quite another matter if you're deliberately ignoring problems and pretending that they don't exist.
