a fee to file a police report?

When I started this tread it was about a daytime theft in Dunkirk that the general public knew nothing about, and fees a victim was asked to pay. It was never about who makes what, who gives out tickets, etc. It's my opinion that this is serious. Daytime, a major street in Dunkirk, a theft where someone went into a vehicle parked behind a bank while a customer was inside for a short period of time? That needed to be in the Observer with a telephone number where someone could call that possible could have seen something or has knowledge of the crime. There are only so many police but lots of citizens and most of us have two eyes and a cell phone. Secondly, fees for whatever? The victim claims it was for a police report. Some say it was for a copy of a police report. Others say it has to do with finger printing. My point was, why should the victim pay any fees? It's bad enough that the girl's purse was stolen with her complete I.D. and a cashed paycheck. But, a slap in the face is walk up to the window and pay.

I personally do not believe this is an isolated incident. I was in the barber shop yesterday on 4th st getting a haircut. I started the conversation about the theft right down the street. Before I mentioned it was a person on a bike, another person that lived on West Sheridan Dr. off rt 20, said it was happening in his neighborhood, and it was determined that someone on a bike came in and burglarized. That was never in the newspaper. This could very well be a gang of thieves that know how to operate-without getting caught. And, by it not even being in the newspaper so the general public can be more aware to watch and lock up, is gasoline on the fire. If they are succeeding without intimidation, they will keep it up.
I have contacted the publisher of the Observer and the victim.I've introduced them to each other. Hopefully this tread will continue-in the Observer-with info made available to the general public.

My god already, there is NO and I repeat NO fee charged to file a police report!!!!!!!!!! You even get a copy of it. Insurance companies and lawyers are charged a small fee for copies of accident reports and other Police reports, but a victim DOES NOT GET CHARGED! This woman was severely mistaken. Sounds like you ins rep have a beef with the PD and are just out to stir up trouble, where there is none!!!!!

I have no "beef" with any police dept. I have friends in law enforcement on both the city and state level. When I started this tread, my first statement was, "I'm passing this information on second hand from the victim'. I wasn't there. I do not know what fees, if any, are involved. I know the victim because she was one of my tenants for 3 1/2 years. I know she is honest, trustworthy, and a hard worker. To my knowledge, she has worked in three financial institutions. That means she takes polygraph tests and goes through more scrutiny than someone getting a job at a local small business. I believe what she said because she believes it. Maybe the Observer can get to the bottom of it and explain what the fees, if any, are for. Again, my first statement, "I'm passing this on second hand.....and "I wasn't there". Now the second part of this. Don't you think this crime and other crimes that have been reported to the police should be in the newspaper so the general public will have knowledge of what is going on around them? I know senior citizens in DK that have never locked their doors because they are believing there is no crime in DK. What bothers me more than the fees is the whole idea that this and other crimes are being committed, and the general public has no knowledge of it.

I see you are in Fredonia. You sound like you have some knowledge about the procedures involved. Remember, this occured in Dunkirk. You said there is no fee to file a police report. Could there be other fees-like for copies, finger printing, pictures, etc?

My internet provider is in Fredonia, I live in Dunkirk, There you go, making a wrong judgement! The observer is a joke, they could not get to the bottom of a barrel, even if they started at the bottom of a barrel. The editor is a jerk that has no personality and has his own agenda. The Police DO NOT CHARGE ANY FEE to make a report. Now if it was the Fire Department, I might be inclined to believe that a fee might be charged for something.

They all have the same training, BMP (bureau for municipal Police) regulates training for ALL police officers in NYS, the training is all the same, does not matter which department you work for. You apparently cant read, Troopers make way money than any other police Dept, and do less work. Local Police Depts. do way more work than troopers, granted the State Police do write a lot of traffic tickets, but thats about it for them.

Wow. Thank you. So now I understand this. It's free to file a police report. If you want a copy you have to pay. That means if your car or home is burglarized, and you need a copy of the police report to file a claim, you pay. Look it up went to dunkirkpolice.com .Clicked on the link at the top for forms. If you go back to the original post, it says "A fee to file a police report?" The question mark at the end means I'm-and you should understand-questioning it. Obviously a victim-particularly a woman having her purse stolen-may have not been thinking clearly. I'm sure she needed a copy if she was going to file a claim. Who would file a police report and not get a copy? Insurance companies need it, if you have to go to court, the first thing a Judge is going to want to see is a copy of the police report, if police were on the scene.

Publisher of observer is a joke! On another point, insurance companies pay for a copy of the police report, its part of your premium! They will try and get you to get the copy, make the insurance company do it, its their job!
