I read with horror in this morning's newspaper that the Dunkirk School is eliminating six reading teacher positions. My goodness, the kids today can barely read, write, or comprehend and now you are going to lay off reading teachers. I would like to know who came up with this solution to save money. Another perfect example of why this County is going right down the drain. Please make yourself heard on this matter and get these positions back. No, I am not a teacher nor do I work in the school system.

While i have read some interesting and smart stuff in the past from joe white this is not one of them. Get a clue. Dunkirk needs these positions. Break room is for kids that have severe behavioral issues. It re-educates them on how to handle anger or stress.

the school systems spends millions to redo the school and for a new athletic field but cant give the kids a great education! Parents should be responsible but the school board should know better, the kids can learn in a tent but they need the help since many parents won't!

Then do not speak on what you do not know of....by the way, China and South Korea out rank us! And the break programs have proven successful!

no joe you don't get it.. Unfortunately we get kids who have many home issues that has nothing to do with what they are taught at school. That is where the behavior and stress is coming from. (abuse, abandonment, etc.)The kids learn how to handle it. And i am sure even back in the 50's they had reading teachers.

Try cutting money at the TOP for a change! Start with sharing administrators. While it sounds so wonderful to just push it back on the parents, reality is NYS it laying it all on the teachers and making it harder and harder for them to do their jobs. Reading teachers are VITAL in our children's education and future!!!!!

Kids cannot get a future without reading and math. To take away reading is a crime. So many kids have some sort of delay in reading and/or math. They need all the help they can get.

Cut back on gym or art or some other class that won't help their future in any great way. Get parents involved.

Many parents can't read themselves so expecting them to help their kids is unreasonable. HOWEVER there is no reason why a parent can't get help right along with the child.

Cutting ANYTHING in schools is unbelievable in my mind but cutting reading is beyond stupid.

Yes, I agree, but then with the jerks most have for parents, I have to ask why I should have to pay for THEIR shortcomings? Build more orphanges and take more kids away. Father Bakers turned out better kids than most schools these days. You cannot make up with money for schools what kids are not getting at home.

You actually think it's a child's fault that they have parents who are clueless? I don't believe in punishing an innocent child. Give the child as much as you can, mentor them, teach them...so they can break the ugly cycle they were born into.

That's what they do in other countries. Their children can run circles around the USA kids.

Excuse me, but in other countries the klids ours are compared to don't throw "F" bombs at teachers, or disrespect adults in charge, and if they did they'd be beaten and/or thrown out of school. The main reason those other kids "run rings" around our kids is because they throw the idiots and misbehaving delinquents out of school!! On top of that, only the top qualifying kids go to a college track high school, the rest are sent to the foreign equivalent of BOCES. THAT'S why their kids score so much higher. We have to average in thugs and idiots with our grade point average, and expend ridiculous resources on juvenile delinquents and the retarded, they don't. Read a bit more instead of just spitting out the American Liberal view, which by the way is why our education sucks.

Now let's get this straight......I am NOT a liberal...not even a democrat.

You are totally correct....The other countries do not put up with the BS that our US school systems do. I thought I made it clear that kids in other countries are SMARTER than US kids??? That was my intent. FYI, I have friends that teach in other countries. They don't WANT to teach in our very liberal school system in the USA.

The good students outweigh the bad in America. It may seem the opposite because of the bias media. Still in all kid DO DESERVE a good education. The thing that bothers me, especially here in NYS, funding depends on scores. There's a district in our area that gives out more High Honors/Honors to students than I have ever seen. It's not because the kids are that smart. It's because the expectations are that low. To me that sucks and the kids aren't truly anything too "complicated". They would never make it in European or Middle Eastern, etc, schools.

The discussion is about eliminating extra reading help if I understand it right. I say NO they cannot do that. Kids MUST learn to be able to read in order to make it in this world. Take away home ec or gym or something...but not reading.

I honestly don't get how you misunderstood my first posting?

FYI I had a friend a long time ago that moved here from a middle eastern country. She was a teacher over there. Met an American and decided to live here in the States. She wanted to get away from the violence in her country.

They had three kids. She was absolutely sickened by the awful education system we have here. She ended up moving herself and their children back to her native land so they could get a better education despite the violence that surrounded them.

Her children are EXTREMELY successful.

All of your postings are BS, and your reaction to the word "retarded" which until VERY recently was an acceptable term for "the disabled" (a bullsh_t term if I ever heard one) tells me you ARE a LIBERAL, everything you say smacks of Liberalism, and teachers cannnot and will not EVER make up for the lousy parents so many kids have, and I'm sick of paying for some jerks parents shortcomings. By the way, until just this year, the NYS agency dealing with the "disabled" was called "The Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities", or OMRDD for short. If you were standing in front of me and slapped me I'd knock your teeth out. Seems fair to me.
