Can someone who remembers better than I do tell me the order the following department stores came after one another in the plazas near the Thruway exit:

Hills
Ames
Zayre
Wal-Mart

Didn't Ames or Zayre close one time in the 80's, only to re-open later across from where they were against a new competitor???

Ames and then Zayre were in the area that now has TJ Maxx. Twin Fair was in the area where the car dealerships are on Vineyard. Fay's Drugs was also in that building at one point. I used to like Fay's. Then, Hills went into Twin Fair area. THEN, Ames went in where Hills was, I believe. KMart was on the lot where Home Depot is now.

Nightmach: thanks so much! Excellent listing there. I was too young to remember the details and there were so many stores that I get confused.

It's also funny imagining Ames on Talcott St.

I vaguely remember Twin Fair, or at least the store name from other locations. My mom used to work at Ames and my uncle at Wal-Mart.

Lets go back alittle farther and remember when Loblaws was located on Main Street between 4th and 3rd and on Central Ave were Pizza and wings and the new barber shop is now. Both at the same time.

I remember Loblaws on Main Street very near the State Theatre. I vaugly remember the Loblaws on Central. Wasn't there a model train store/hardware store there at one time? What was across the street? A Nu-Way?

McMachan's paint store also carried train sets in60's & early 70's.
Loblaws is a good memory.Cashiers actually reading & keying in prices on registers.
One great memory I have before moving in the late 70's was all the turn of the century cash registers in town, in most of the small businesses.
