It really makes me wonder why I get up and go to work everyday when people move here and get everything paid for them as they sit home and watch direct tv ,cable their big screen tv.How is it that so many that dont work are driving newr cars than many working class people who live in this area??Move here from part way around the world because its the land of opportunity,No economy is shot so its not lets move to Dunkirk Ny because we want to work.No we want handouts from all you working people. Its a Joke!Lets close all the parks so they can live in nice new places with bay windows, indoor garages, and drive nice cars and live the High life off of those who work,I have to clear he snow off my old car before I go into work to pay for their new or nicer car sits indoors...

That's a gross exaggeration. A family of 4 gets around $700 per month cash. How do you figure they have new cars and "inside?" garages? These people are not living the high life but they are getting something for nothing. Good for those who can't do it on their own but an outrage for those who can but don't try.

I agree, NY needs to change work rules for these people--anyone who can work should be working. As it is now, they're sent to a worksite and if they don't go, not much is done about it because the fair hearing judges are usually on the side of the welfare client-if it even gets that far.

Please write to your elected officials about how you feel (and don't exaggerate or you lose credibility). If everyone who complained about welfare wrote to them it might make a difference.

Yes, please write, Poster #1. But, for the love of God, please have someone who knows how to write and spell look it over before you send it out. You also lose credibility if you write like you haven't made it past third grade.

Yep. Nothing like living on $600-700/month to live the "high life." What is the obsession with welfare on this site??? Is there that little of interest in your world to write and/or think about??? Don't get me wrong. There are too many people on Assistance, but if they ended the cash assistance program tomorrow, there would NOT be enough jobs for everyone in this area. Or in the state or even the country. Private industry is not hiring all that many people, folks. Should you write to the legislatures??? Absolutely! But don't forget to mention that they need to change the State Constitution before any other changes can be made.

Does it ever occur to some people that this is a place for people to express their opinions and feelings and not a place to be judged for their grammar, spelling, etc.? Just maybe some of these people do not have a "complete" education. You don't need to make snide remarks. If you are smart enough or lucky enough to have an education, act like you do. Don't be so arrogant! There must be something in the water in this part of the state - a lot of pompous egotistical people. Must be the malt in the beer.

BTW, each additional child nets the parent about $100 per month so there goes that theory--no one gets rich by having children. The long term welfare people are hopeless and aimless and without goals. They don't plan their lives or their futures, they just let things happen because they don't feel they're in control.

Sure, this needs to change, people shouldn't have kids if they can't afford to take care of them. When people work for their money, there's more thought put into how its spent and what one can afford. No name has it right, the state constitution has to change--that's what prevents New York State from making it tougher to get welfare.

Its easy to let things continue as they are and very difficult to pressure legislators for change but it can be done if there are enough people speaking up. One thing is for sure, nothing will change unless we do something besides complain.

Jimmyz, how many new cars do you see every day? How do you know the people driving them are on welfare? Do you know how many people on welfare don't drive new cars or even have cars? Your statements are based on your own prejudice, not on fact.

Just because you know someone on welfare with a nice car doesn't mean its true for all. And, maybe they got the car when they were working and now its all they have to help them job search. Statements like these are ignorant and don't encourage the dialog necessary to change the status quo.

Unless you know everyone on welfare, you're just making useless, fictional generalizations.

I'm surprised to read comments protecting the people on welfare. The only reason I can think of for this is that these defenders are on welfare. Why else would anyone not mind paying the way of someone who chooses not to work?

They may only get $700 per month, but they also get free groceries, subsidized housing, free cell phones (ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?), free or low-cost health care, and handouts from the community. They may supplement their "income" by working under the table, selling drugs, or claiming all sorts of "disabilities" such as ADHD, depression, sore backs, etc.

I hope people do not stop complaining about our state's welfare system. WE SHOULD BE OUTRAGED!!! A recent news article stated that the taxes paid by Ch. Co. residents are in the top 10 IN THE COUNTRY!!!

Take the money from welfare and medicaid (not medicare for the elderly), eliminate bogus disability claims, and PUT THIS MONEY TOWARD ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. Let's start making things in America again! Create jobs and make these people work for their checks like the rest of us!!! I think you'd also see less crime, as people who work 40+ hours a week are too tired to commit crime!

haha welfare does pay more than work. one number i saw was that full benefits is the equivalent of a $25000/year salary. Employers hire at around $15,000. Why would a person take a paycut to go to work.

Oh also, in our state its called welfare-to-work. If you are on welfare you can be placed to work for a community organization. Also you have to maintain a constant job search. If there is a job available you have to take it or lose benefits.

Finally, if you work for a living you probably aren't contributing to the taxes that pay for welfare. only the country's roughly richest 20%(above $100,000 a year or so) of people contribute to this tax burden.

I agree with you about the disabilities, but that is not welfare. That is SSI and involves the federal government ... NOT NYS. SSI is THE biggest waste of taxpayer dollars in my own humble opinion.

Do you know just about anyone could have a disability according to the DSM? Do you know alot of children get SSDI on their own if they have a learning disability? It runs in families, they have their kids tested, then have a doctor rate them under a DSM condition. It happens all the time in alot of schools. First they get tested then they run to the social security office.

Do you know that ADULTS can get SSI for a learning disability??? I mean, come on! Don't tell me that a 30 yr old w/a learning disability can't work at WalMart ... My daughter would have qualified for SSI due to emotional issues as a teenager, and I never wanted that for her. If someone's giving her a "paycheck" for a condition, what would be her incentive to get better??? People complain about welfare, but it's SSI that's the problem. Entire families where every person is "disabled" and getting $40,000+ a year, plus Medicaid ... NYS will pay their utilities too b/c people w/disabilites can't be expected to take care of themselves (and I'm not talking about truly disabled people ... That is a different story altogether). THIS is the reason that social security is going backrupt.

How come every topic is always about welfare? People do not live high on the system. No excuse the ones that do are lying about their resources. That is why they are collecting, but the people who do not lie are just barley making. You have to go to a work site for 30 hours a week. A family of 4 gets very little money their rent is more then what welfare allows. If they refuse to go to the work site they are sanction (no money goes to them) until fulfill their duties.

As for SSI how can you complain about their disabilities are you kidding me. I bet you anyone on SSI would trade you their health any day. I know I would want my kids to be healthy and not have the issue that we go through. Yes, my son is autistic and I hate the fact he is but I deal with it. My husband is blind and i would love for him to be able to have eyes that sees so you can see the rain drops, the colors of the flowers and or maybe his kids faces on xmas morning. I can assure there is no brand new car sitting in my driveway, hell it needs work i have 1999 Durango would love to have a better and safer vehicle for my family but I can't do it today. I need everyday things first for my kids. I'm not complaining I choose to marry him and i love him for many other reason. But life is not just about how much money you can or take from the system. I'm glad there is options out there for us to help us and I'm thankful of it everyday. We do give back as much as we can to help someone else who is in need. But like i have said before I do agree that there are many people who abuse the system. That's very said, but please don't just assume that everyone who gets help is a scum low life a feeding off the system. Cause not all of us are. Just remember not everyone is born healthy just cause it looks like there maybe nothing wrong with does not mean there isn't. Many disabilities you can not see.
