The fact people hang around to the point of thinking they may be panhandlers or drug dealers and it doesn't seem to matter. The fact that the people who have the "coveted" city jobs act like they are doing you a favor and they all look to be related. And to top it off. The last time I was in town, I didn't know a sole! Not the place it was in the early 70's by far! So I would say, I miss everything.

iF you can find or create a good job, no where is better. The lake, the good summers, the good Autumns, TOLERABLE weather, SUNY/JCC both in town now, well fed women. Whole bunch of good stuff.

Well-fed women are a good thing? Hmmm! To each his own, I guess.

Anyway - miss about Dunkirk?

1. Fish fry.
2. Beef on Weck
3. Fish fry that isn't freakin' catfish.
4. Lake Erie sunsets.
5. Four seasons (seriously, although having winter a bit shorter would be okay).
6. Ethnic bakeries (they probably don't exist anymore).
7. Fish fry.
8. Insanely optimistic Bills' fans whose hearts are broken yearly.
9. Generally-speaking - good, generous people.
10. Polish weddings.
11. Fish fry.

The way that the Autumn leaves smell in the middle of October.

Growing a great garden.

Riding a bike around the lakefront.

Fish fry (obviously).

Dunkirk characters now dead? Tough question. One that comes to mind immediately though is Coach Al Stuhlmiller. This guy was insane - like the time he thought he'd been shot while coaching third base in Salamanca ("I've been shot before and I know what it feels like."). Superstitious as all get out - no crossed bats, had to touch home plate when to bench after coaching at third, scorekeeper had to sit right next to him, etc. A loon in basketball - always on his feet yelling jibberish. But at the same a damn good coach - without a doubt the best baseball coach in history in all of WNY and arguably the best basketball coach in Chautauqua County in his day. Also a nice guy and a city councilman (better than anything Dunkirk has in politics today!) He is definitely missed.

I also echo elcaribe on his list. I had not heard about Ray - WOW!

Yes, I do remember him. He was indeed a good man, inspite of his short time amoung us.
Denise Maslakowski, DHS Class of 72, passed away a few months ago, a beautiful and multi-talented lady for sure.

An old time now gone? How about Clem Lutz - police chief, mayor, but best known for organizing excursions to Cleveland to see the Indians lose to the Yanks!

ED GLAPA? He has to be top 5 Dunkirk character, or as I prefer, star, all time, no? How did that poor SOB meet his demise?

That makes sense. He was actually half decent between the pipes although his style was good for a few laughs. Really protective of his crease for sure. I remember him going after Marty Wysocki with his goalie stick for getting in too tight. Yeah, he's definitely top 5 all time without a doubt.

How old was Ed G? Was he related to Danny G?. Yeah Denise and carla; both brains in school. Carla is the Pharmacy Dept Head of some Pharmacy College. But think of the names: Tom Meister, John Van Dete, Scott W. and his older brother (Barry?), Pat Pacos, that Burke girl, Jacky Walters. Hell I remember when Mark Shakineski (spelling) was hit by the truck on route 5 - 40-45 years ago. Rick Kaczor? That was a character.

Not sure of Eddy's age but he is Danny's older brother (the other brothers were Kevin, one year older than Danny, and Gary older than Kevin). I think Carla Mas is here in Texas. It is Czekanski and it was Bobby - we went to St. Hyacinth's together for 9 years - he got killed the summer before freshman year. Scott W? When did Tommy Meister die? I only recently heard that John Vendette died.

Tommy Meister died 1974 ish? Route 5, car accident. Mustang I think. Scott Worthum ( I suspect he's to young for your recollection) died after aspirating emesis. His older brother Barry drownd 1970 (?). Scott had issues. Mike McQuiggan just passed on; Rick Christopher died 5 years ago. Of course, Leonard H in Houston...
