I may have only taken one journalism class in college, but I didn't know that being the editor of the paper allows you to make the paper cater to your biased opinion. The Editor of the Dunkirk Observer did, literally, say to me that he is allowed to publish biased articles on the front page of his paper because, as editor, he has the power to choose whatever he wants, especially when it follows his opinion.

Forget facts that were incorrect in one of the front page articles, that doesn't matter to him. The editor would rather start a yelling match about a case which he has not attended any of the meetings or the project site in question. But you know what he did, talk to a scorn person. Now he is an expert on the situation.

Even though the legal background of the situation was never brought up. Or the other side of the story interviewed. Nope. A Dunkirk Observer article doesn't need that silly stuff. I guess all you need is a story to spin in a "sensational" way and boom it's printed on the front page as fact.

Good Job Dunkirk Observer! Presenting pressing "facts" to the public. Top quality journalism and reports.

Its a small town newspaper, thats how they all are. It is too bad they do not realize that harping on all that is bad like they do is not a good way to introduce newcomers to the area. If you are passing through and all you see is bad news in the paper, what would you think of the area?

I would think we need some changes in the area.

Obviously! But people say that everywhere. While we dont have the industry or jobs that we want, it is really relatively safe and quiet. Even in the City of Dunkirk, the actual crime rate is very low.

There are always good things and always bad things about an area. No need to, as was already said, harp on the bad. You dont have to report just the good news either, but a nice balance is required and these podunk newspapers dont get that. Its not just the observer, many small newspapers do that. No journalistic knowledge or integrety.

Lots of both the good and the bad every day in the Observer.

Are you sure that it was a journalism class that you attended? Your sentence structure is terrible. Also, what specific article are you writing about?

If you want people to take your criticism of a newspaper seriously, your thread should be titled with its" and not "it's," you philistine.

Considering that seems to be how all other news media operates, Id say the observer editor is no different than a TV news producer or a NY Times editor by printing what he wants.

The Observer actually has an opinion now. I like it. We may not always agree with the opinion but at least it is expresing soemthing other than a GOP philosophy "across the board", withot any criticism if local government.

I have had the exact same EXPERIENCE...Total different topic. He called out a business I work for with a repeated slanderous nature. He told me that we haven't been placing ads with his paper like we used to under previous management. WHAT? He also said he was friends with a former employee who was released from duty and went on to basically say we wouldn't be able to change his opinion no matter what we said. Then prints in paper we refuse to comment. I can't believe the outrageous behavior. I will NEVER buy or support his paper with ads. I urge readers to search facts and take all that is printed with a grain of salt! Sorry that you had this experience and know you are NOT alone!

The evening observer is better served as a bird cage liner rather than a source for news.
