After 45 years in business The Book Nook will close its doors on May 31st. Rick and Patricia Donovan will make an official announcement on Wednesday. You heard it hear first folks. The Observer will pick up my sloppy seconds.

This makes me sad. As a nerdy kid in the Dunkirk/Fredonia area, I was really excited to go to the Book Nook when my mom could take me. It was there that I bought all the Dungeons and Dragons books that I still own. I never knew the Donovan's but I hope this is just because they are ready to retire and not because people aren't buying books in the area anymore.

Everyone buys books online through Amazon and stuff like that. Nobody's buying hard copy books anymore. Everything's technology based and they can't compete with that. I've never been there but it's been something I've always seen whenever I go to D&F Plaza. It was one of the few lasting benchmarks of home.

Yeah, it's not a surprise. I just hope the people that made my childhood awesome were able to leave their business on their terms.

BRYN! Makes me sad, too. I was a fellow nerdy kid and my mom would take me there to buy Judy Blume books. Jay and I visited the Book Nook last month when we were in Dunkirk; it was comforting to find it still chugging along.
