for me,: what happened to the renewal in urban renewal.the mid 70,s govt.program should have been called urban destruction !!!I was only a boy,and maybe ignorrant on the subject, but who was in charge of thinking that demolishing half of dunkirk was a GOOD THING.It just seemed to me that from that point on there was nothing but decline for many years, good to see and read positive accounts on harbour ,boardwalk and incubator to name a few.good luck to a unique and historical town. former res...

Go back and see who was in charge during that era.you would be surprised to see who sold out Dunkirk.....though they would never admit the end result was their fault..........

What are the names of the persons who sold out Dunkirk? Were they businessmen, politicians, outsiders....? I was a WAVE at the time and was away from Dunkirk but would still like to know who you think responsible for creating the wasteland that is still my hometown.

I was close to the situation, and It may pain some to put this name up here but Frank Gawronski was the biggest push behind The urban renewal and why Dunkirk is what it is, Im not bashing on here I don't like people who bash others out of the safety of the internet but do the research and thats the truth. A group called C.A.B was against this project, but was weakened when the city bought out certain members with city jobs.

Urban renewal ran out of $$$$. It was bullets or butter (social programs). There was the Vietnam War. We lost alot of buidlings, but in truth, what would be in all those old buildings?

Good point but all urban renewal brought was government housing and welfare, that changed the whole make up of the community. Maybe it would have stayed a sustaining community who knows ??

urban renewal was in the late 70's early 80's and I stand by what I said earlier maybe you can google it Im not sure what will come up but I believe it was more toward the early eighties?? Gary Mihalak(sp) was mayor then Eddy Gregoroski.

and the fact that 36% of school age children live below the poverty rate is the cruelest reason of all..Nice going for the politicians and public servants who grab their pay check on the way out of town at the end of the day !

interesting subject, for me anyways,Not that exzact dates are that important,But as i remember one of the 1st buildings to come down under the program was the : what could have been the old hitoric dunkirk hotel n/w c 4th and central accross from city hall,i dont think i was more than 12 making it 1971 72 and it...: UR was very much talk of the town.Of course it takes big bucks to restore and hopefully fill a restored building, and change was inevitabble being the mom and pop organazations where on theire way out unfortunatly.i havent been back to dk. since 89 but good to see and read through internet things are being built and restored instead of demolished, being a mason i am prob.bias when it comes to demo. of older historic looking bldg..looks like they did a great job on the old town and country bldg.here is a great site if youre not aware yet:'" little pieces of dunkirk "hundreds of picts of dk.including demo.

You mean the Frank Gawronski who graduated from CMHS about 1963, whose brothers were Dennis and Chester (the Priest), and whose Dad was "Waxy" a bartender @ one of the clubs? Geez, that Frank was pretty young at that time.

Yeah I might be mixing up the new public housing issue of the 80's thats what the C.A.B fought against. Frank was behind that with Gary Mihalak (sp) sorry , my bad

If one was to look back accurately Urban Renewal devastated Dunkirk in the early 1970s. Gib snyder was mayor 1976-79 and was left with the mess to deal with.

It was early late 60's and early 70's. Everyone was peeing their pants worrying about the churches and schools going down. Sacred Heart Church and School went down. That was 1968. Frank Gawronski was an Airborn Ranger in Vietnam at the time. Before he went into politics, he assisted Bob Moscato with football coaching.
