Money goes where money is...the "American dream" was not the norm and is slowly becoming an indangered species. All most of us will ever do is work until our bodies break, our minds go, or we die and still have only treaded enough water to keep our chins above it. Sad too because the majority of the people in the dwindling middle class and those now considered poverty level just want to work and be able to retire comfortably. I remember when this whole area was full of Mom and Pop owned businesses and the customer mattered. Our children and grandchildren will most likely never know those simpler times. Kudos to anyone still owning and running a small business!

Of course some people have both and some have SS as well. Investment income is in the 15% percentile bracket as I said. I think if you did a poll of the average american household you would find that yes it is very uncommon especially with the high rate of unemployment and the number of people who have opted out of the workforce. Don't forget that last category is not even factored into the unemployment rate. If they were the rate would be in the low to middle teens.

To better prove your point I would think you would need to define your "American Dream". If exsisting mom & pop shops in Dunkirk is the biggest factor in YOUR American dream then yes those days are probably gone forever.

The reason for the current surge in the stock market is currency manipulation. It has nothing to do with the real health of the economy. Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke is dumping worthless paper currency into the monetary system. The banks are taking this currency and investing into the stock market to drive up the Dow. Why? Because the banks can't make any money loaning it out at the current low rates. The real pulse of the economy are in goverment bond rates which continue to decline. The bubble will burst.

I don't think you understand what is driving the stock market at this point and what does your question have to do with the personal income of the middle class. Do you have any idea what will happen once the interest rate "holiday" comes to an end,and it must and will come to a end.
