"Mothman", much like the "Jersey Devil" and the "Flatwoods Monster" were owls. I know there were claims that these things were 9 foot tall in some cases, but if that were the case a creature 9 foot tall would need a wingspan of 50 feet or so to fly. People tend to misinterpret things they see in the blackness of night.

The "Jersey Devil" was reported by Indians living there. I don't think Indians would mistake an owl for a creature.

I looked and I looked but all I could find are statements that the Lenni Lenape also had legends regarding the JD, but I was unable to find anything more. I did find a cross reference to a Lenni Lenape story that is similar to the JD, it's about a character called "living stone face". My original statement was base on a recent report where a lady and her son were chased into their house by a "white creature with a nine foor wingspan that hissed and swooped out of the trees after them". That's a great horned owl if I ever heard one.

No way they were owls. The statements don't jibe with how an owl would appear! There were multiple witnesses that described similar large creatures.
