No luck with my 1st attempt to get feedback on your town, so I'll give it another try here. I'm just wondering if this area is a place worth investing in, or moving to. You read alot of great things on the internet, but it's all about Greek restaurants and sponge diving. I'd like to know your opinions on how safe it is. Is it expensive to buy a home, insure it, pay property taxes on it? Is it a close knit community? Does it have a night life? Knowing what you already know, would you move into the area (with a family)?

Since my son was killed there and all the things I've heard about the place since August I would say no it is not a place for a family to be. I was there right after my son was killed in Tarpon Springs and I just watched the area around convenience stores and at the complex where my son was killed and I observed drug activity is very open there.

Judy I'm sincerly sorry for your loss. I'm a father of 5 and I can't imagine anything being worse than what you have been going through. I am a little confused though because I've checked crime statistics for the city and they register a ZERO in the murder column. This means they are either not reporting murders or your poor sons demise was perhaps the exception to the rule..not sure which.

Just for your info go to the City of Tarpon Springs,Fl. and you will see what a good city is like. Like any city there is good and bad,but the good here outweighs the bad. I have lived here for 21 years without any problems. I think this is a great place to raise a family and live a wonderful life. As far as taxes and insurance go,It's higher than some but alot lower than other places. The curent trend on housing is the byers market and you can purchace a home for low dollars. The job market is really low at this time and advise you get a job prior to locating here. Again a great place to live. But thats my opinion. Peace

Thank you Walt. There have been plenty of good things said about your area to me by locals such as yourself (except for this really angry chickypoo calling herself Tristina). I'll be in your neck of the woods sometime soon to see it all for myself. Thanks again.

I lived there, and would not recommend it as a good place to raise a family. Unless you want to teach your kids how to be a drug dealer. I renamed it "Toilet Springs" when I was there, and the name still seems to fit. I feel sorry for anyone who is trying to raise children there. My suggestion would be to try Holiday, or New Port Richey. If they are still in operation, drive around the block where "Brothers Manufacturing" is.(They make the tiny tags license plates for bikes, ect). The cops drive right past drug dealers in that area, as they probably get a cut of the profits. Most anywhere is better than "Toilet Springs".

Tarpon has some beautiful areas, but the crime is way worse than you want to admit. I lived in Holiday for 9 years, and worked in Tarpon Springs. It is a drug haven. Not to mention the multiple drunk driving arrests every day. One only has to pick up a local newspaper to see that. In the nine years I worked in Tarpon, I was rear ended 4 times by drunk drivers, had my vehicle burgled twice, and was constantly approached by drug addicts panhandling for money. I bet the houses are not very expensive though.

Interesting remarks. I've lived on the East side of Tarpon Springs for ten years, and have never had any problems. As for "going out", I doubt that this area has any kind of action for young people, but living on Lake Tarpon is more my bag. The lake is great fun, and love the shops and restaurants over at the sponge docks. It all depends on what your looking for. Sure, there are questionable areas like all places, and if you know them, you avoid them. As for Holiday and New Port Richey, they are worse!!!! And the caliber of people is not what I find here in Tarpon Springs. But that is my observations after ten years.

It's a nice place to visit, with a some good Greek and seafood restaurants, and lots of kitchy tourist shopping along the Sponge Docks. It's also a Greek Orthodox 'mecca'. But its got a lot of seedy areas replete with druggies and pros (even right near the Police Dept.) East of US 19 is generally nicer, and along the Anclote River. You might want to consider Palm Harbor, or Ozona, or Crystal Beach, if you like the North Pinellas waterfront communities. Hope this helps. Good luck!

My parents live in Tarpon Springs. My children and I visit every summer for 4-6 weeks. I have been trying to get my husband to move there for 14 years. I'd move there tomorrow and so would my children. I hear that Tarpon Springs has one of the best school districts in FL. It's absolutely beautiful there! One of these days we may have a long distance marriage!

I left Florida in 1979, but have always wanted to return to Tarpon Springs. I'm reading your posts and my heart is breaking because of the narcotics that are being spoken about; or murders happening. I have various cousins living there, and one of my second cousins recently moved to Holiday. My grandparents settled there from Greece. What's going on in that town? Is the cost of living outrageous? Is there any area that is safe to live in in Tarpon?

Tarpon Springs is a nice town to visit. Like many have said there are nice areas and bad areas. I'm not sure about the schools...I do know that Oldsmar FL, which isn't too far from Tarpon Springs has some of the top Elementary schools and the high school which is Oldsmar and Palm Harbor is East Lake. which is a high achiever in academics.

The city is a haven for drug dealers. I've lived here for over 15 years and things have gotten seriously out of control. Although the police seem to be sincerely trying to crack down on this mess, there is some credible evidence that suggests some prominent businessmen in the city are deeply involved with these drug rings.

To people who say its rich in culture that is true but that makes it only safe to VISIT. I have lived here for almost 2 years. I have seen so many messed up things here. There is almost nothing to do here. The beach is the only good part. If you like night walks on the beach your out of luck they lock them up at sunset. There is way to much drug dealers here. Tarpon springs high school was a D ranked high school last year. its an A ranked now. They had three good art teachers there. They got rid of the two best teachers. One of the teachers was talking bad about a student there to :/ Onces they got that new principal it got "better" only because they know how to hide things better. We had a fire and murder recently and a publix shooting. This may be one of the worst cities i have EVER lived in. The Greek culture will not help this city. It needs to be cleaned up first. Also stay away from Tarpon High at night some kids are jumping people.
