Pretty unbelievable in this day and age and in this country.

It is clear that the tobacco industry got its way in FL, with a preemption law that solidly in place. The industry figured out a long time ago that it is cheaper and easier to lobby the devil out of (or into) a state legislature than it is to go out and try to bamboozle lawmakers at the local level where they can see exactly what problems smoking causes or doesn't in their communities.

If you make the law apply to farms even though it is only relevant to a city situation, passing a law will be much more difficult.

But really, there is actually still a state that thinks tobacco smoke knows enough to stay away from the non-smoking section in a room?

Actually it's not "this day and age". Read a little closer and you'll see this article was published in 2000, April 13th.

Ah, thank you. That feels a little better. Guess I should take the Topix idea of "news" with a sack or two of salt, eh?

I wonder whether Florida still has such an ironclad preemption clause in place, though? Might have to do some research on that one.

Apparently there is still a struggle going on in that arena.

In a free country, it would be up to the owner of the property to allow smoking on his establishment or not, or decide how big the sections would be, if he wanted any at all.

In a free country, it would be up to the nonsmoker whether or not to shoot any SOB who lit up while he was eating.

If they wanna smoke when they eat, then set up tables outside out back behind the kitchen near the dumpster and grease traps

Yup. Again, geared to the tone of the content, as it does not really depend on sourcing for validity.
The thing is, these people have to figure out, somehow, that anarchy doesn't mean "My side gets to throw away all the rules we wanna and everyone else has to keep playing nice."

They want to play all "Oh, it's a slippery slope" when they are talking about regulation of the #1 preventable cause of death in a number of countries, I have every right to play "slippery slope" tunes right back at them when they spout off about throwing laws out the window.

"Oh, just wait until they pass a law against something YOU like!"?

Fine. "Just wait until they start ignoring laws that protect YOU."

Flipsides away.

Did someone put a gun to your head and FORCE you to go to a restaurant that allowed smoking?

Or just start killing the people who enforce these anti-private property laws.

Did anyone put a gun to the smokers head that FORCED them to go inside a restaurant? Smokers are socially not accepted in ANY business in 2011. You are welcome just not your disgusting harmful smoking habit. How dare you still think you can harm others with YOUR smoking habit. Just who the hell do you think you are?

I'm not the one that is going to stay home anymore, it's time for you to keep your nasty ass home. We don't need or want you in public. GOT IT!!!
