The new Bishop is a faith-filled and pastoral leader.

Hopefully he's knows something about the Bible; most priests don't. They only know that when the pope says kiss my big toe, they go to the floor.

Msgr Doherty in an excellent priest who has served the Church well. He will be a pastoral bishop to be sure. Because of his many years in parishes, he will bring a unique perspective to Church leadership and guidance.

It will probably be strange for him not to have evening meetings and late night calls to the hospital.

The Lafayette Diocese is larger in area than the Rockford Diocese, includes the suburban areas of Indianapolis, and yet has a smaller catholic population. At the introduction news conference some weeks ago, the present Bishop commented that Bishop-elect Doherty's present parish, in Dundee, would be a large parish in this new diocese.

It would seem that he will be doing a good deal of evangelization and catechesis. Possibly even for his presbyterate.

He is very capable and able that is for sure.

Of course you know he was in Rockford for several years. So he has also been around red-necked, stump jumpin hillbilles.

I grew up on the west side of Rockford. I always marveled at the number of pick-up trucks with primer, no tailgates, and usually a turn signal flickering. Rockford is a blue collared town to the core. Classical music and dance were never real big in Rockford, but put a monster truck in the metro center and you would have a full house.

You grew up on the west side and lived to talk about it. Awesome. Now I have a question about Rockford. I am from a family without sisters, can I date outside my own family?

Joseph, do you remember the story of the Rockford woman who hired a stripper for her 12 year old son's birthday. Her excuse was that he was already sexually active. Some real outstanding people up there in Rockford.

Hey. Yes I do. The Rockford folks are really great people. It is a blue collar working class city. Even in areas of the west side where people are afraid to go into, these are simply laborers. They are not the terrible people make them out to be.

By the same token, it is not a place with a lot of college graduates, and bar life on Fridays and Saturdays is fairly active. Sometimes their judgment, or even understanding is not the greatest.

By and by it was a nice city to live in.
