I remember Dr. Pfautz very well. I remember my first time going to him by myself around 1954. I was in 4th grade going to school in Duncannon. I got sick in class and the teacher at that time let walk up the street to see doc. He never asked who was going to pay before he treated me, he just treated me and my parents settled with him later. Try that today, good luck if you do. Another time I remember him well, was when a horse reared up and fell on me at my home. Here came doc in his old chevy hitting the high spots, junped out and ran to treat me. Off to the hospital he sent me with a broken leg. I remember another time my brother and I had a bicycle accident. I required stiches above my eye. He made me wait until he got his daughter in to look at me to show her what could happen not being careful on her bike. Another time when I was grown and had a family of my own, I got sick and was having trouble breathing and put off going to the doctor because of lack of money. Finally I just had to do something and went to see him. He asked me why I hadn't come before this. I said because of lack of money, well that got my butt chewed off. He said that he had treated me for so many years that I should know better. He said that he knew that I would have settled up with him when I got back on my feet. He treated my parents, my family and some of my grand children before he passed. I remember him as someone that could be tough if he needed to be and above all someone that cared enough about people that he was available 24/7 to anyone that needed him. I remember seeing him and his wife in his later years at the county fair and was shocked, I thought he never took a day off and even said something to that effect to him. He just laughed. There is a very big hole left in the world since he has passed. A hold that will never be filled. A man like that only comes around once in a life time and I can say I am sorry along with a lot of other people, that he is missed so very much. I don't think there will ever be another one like him.
