Why was this stuff on a server or computer connected DIRECTLY to the web in the first place? This is freaking STUPID to the nth degree..... I really hope that they fire/possibly jail the person who was responsible for this computer network.

Because SCHOOLS, oddly enough, are the LAST ones to learn the new technology they perport to teach. They mostly get second hand equipment and inherantly have bad firewalls.

Parents are not required to give their child's SSN to the school for enrollment. If the parent did provide it, that is the breach of security.

It's my direct experience that schools have great software/hardware. The companies want students to be tried on their product so their parents become brand loyal to it.

Hardware and software have little to do with it. It's the firewalling that needs work. I mean we're talking computers that kids can plug their little memory sticks into yes?

Oh, and this idea of giving ssns to educational institutions, during the late 1990's you either did that or they didn't process your application, at least in college; I don't know about elementary, middle and high schools. Now it IS illegal to ask you to provide it. You can have a student id number.
