So how did they find the victim? The article only says he was found less than two hours after deploying the police's new toy, it doesn't indicate that it had anything to do with the discovery.

Sorry, Larry was not thinking.. I am his brian, Ima gonna think now. Oh sonar! been around for over 50 years. But the article says, "Fairfax County Police decided to use the new sonar which creates a 3 dimensional image of the bottom to search for the body. This allowed the divers to avoid having to comb the entire lake bottom."
Oh, larry is smarter now after he learns vocabulary words. "image, sonar, 3d, think first, and last but not least canoe.

Didn't know how to swim and STILL did not wear a life vest. That's like skydiving without a parachute.
Methinks alcohol was involved.

Why is it that I can buy a Hummingbird 1197c High-Definition Side Imaging sonar unit with GPS for my bass boat for $3,000 that gives you a picture like image on a color screen but the county has to spend $50,000? The fleecing of America continues...

Sean, lets think for a minute. The police are looking for small things like dead people. you are looking for big things like fish...(tongue in cheek)
The truth of the matter is you dont work for Larry. If you did, you could have gotten the county to buy the 75K one for your boat and it would bait the hook for you!
On a real note it is used for maping which can be used in investigations to show the location of things where your unit is just for right there and the definition on that unit will allow them to see small things like guns in more shallow water slightly burried. But they still can not find Jimmy Hoffa!

Not only that but the water was cold. Even a swimmer could succumb to temperature if the distance to shore was significant.

I think the GPS function of the cheaper model (6% of the cost) covers the mapping function. You can mark locations as way-points and later download them into a GIS program. As for finding guns, I hear magnets work well. You can buy them for about $15 (that would leave you with roughly $46,985) and they can lift 250 lbs. Unless they are looking for guns smaller then a sunfish and made of a non-ferris material I still don't see a justification of the cost. But it's not my money, unless of course they are purchasing it with federal grant funds...

Now that's something I've always wondered about. The federal government REQUIRES boats to be equipped with life jackets for each passenger. There have been several times when I was out on the lake when the police boat came along checking to make sure...

Yet, you can fly around in a small airplane all day long and they don't require any parachutes at all.

Can't people swim better than they can fly?
