Alzheimer’s disease progressively diminishes memory and cognitive performance, and is presently incurable. People with Alzheimer's typically live four to eight years after diagnosis, and their family caregivers suffer high levels of emotional duress. Over 60 percent of Alzheimer's caregivers rate their stress from caregiving as high or very high, and a third suffer symptoms of depression.
An estimated 31,000 New Mexicans with Alzheimer’s disease receive unpaid care from more than 104,000 family members and friends.
