Does anyone know of any nice deer killed in Scott County this past deer season? I know that the Duffield and Fairview area is a good place for large bucks. I hunted in Scott this year and it did not appear to be very many hunters as in the past but the deer seem to be larger and I saw several good bucks.

I found that deer this year didnt use fields much until very late in the year. The best advice i can tell you is to find an area where a good buck is using, with scrapes and horned bushes, and stay there. A frequent problem is that people move around too much. If you will just hunt in one area, where there is buck sign, the buck will be there. Try to find a place in the Duffield or in the Fort Blackmore area to hunt because that is where i have had the most luck and saw the most large bucks. I hope my advice can help ya.

I wasn't looking for advice so much, as I wanted to see what size of deer were killed in the County. I wanted to get a feel of deer size and how they compared to the past. I, also, am interested if the number of hunters are on the decrease or about the same as in the past. I have a very special place that has produced many good bucks in the past twenty years. I found this year to be a year that I saw many more larger bucks than in years past. I can see at least one large buck from the same stand but this year I saw five that were 8 points up to 10 points. I saw at least eleven bucks this past season in this area and all but three were from the same stand that has produced six buck kills in the past three years. Most of these kills come in muzzleloader season. The second week of muzzleloader season is my most productive. Last year I saw three larger buck in fields in the late muzzleloader season. I am an older hunter that has the freedom to hunt the entire season if I have tags to do so. I agree with you that you must stay in the area that you know to have bucks. I have found that bucks will use the same area year after year. I have found out the key to seeing larger bucks is that you must let the young bucks walk. It took me several years to realize this fact. I find that now is the time to get out and scout out the deer for next year. You will be suprised that what this past year's sign will tell you about buck travel.

Yea it sems to me that there were less hunters this year. I know of a few good 8 points bein killed but by askin what has been checked in at check station you can learn alot. I also begin scouting for next year now. I go to my hunting area year round and i keep trail cameras up too. I do not put food or bait in front of my trail cameras because that will interfer with the bucks natural cycles. I would estimate on what i know that bout 3/4 of the bucks kill this year were 18 to 30 months and that is why no bigger bucks are being killed, if you kill the small ones there wont be any larger bucks. Based on hearing the gun shots from my stand i would say there were alot less hunters this year cause even on busy days i only heard 3 to 5 shots.

I agree with everything that you are saying. I don't bait or use food to get them into camera range. If each of us had the will power to let bucks reach 4 or 5 years of age we would see some great bucks in Scott County. Certain areas in the County do produce some good deer. I wish more people had the same though process that you seem to have. I still get a thrill when I see a large buck. Some of the larger ones have not been when i didn't have a chance to take them or I didn't want to risk a bad shot. Have a great day and good hunting.
