u r right - it's called capitalism - the rich get richer; and the rest of us pay the price - think maybe we need a good food co-op in this area ?

I miss FoodLion. I hate going to Food City so crowded and the prices are way to high. But what can you do unless you want to go shop at Payless in Appy or drive to Norton to Walmart.

Do the drive and go somewhere else. Its totally crazy this town has only one grocery store. FC prices are outrageous because there is no competition. They can charge whatever, just like Food Country in Duffield.

I totally agree. Thats why the prices are the way they are. I also heard they rent out the building that FoodLion was in so no others can move into it which I think is totally stupid! I kinda like Sav A lot except fot their meats. Always look green to me!

Food Lion took over Food City. Everyone from Food Lion is now full time at Food City. When employees from Food City was promised full time, they came in and took all the positions away from them.

Not true. The old FoodLion building is still listed for rent. http://www.landmarkprop.com/SearchResult.aspx...

Let's not get carried away. FoodLion went downhill ever since they were bought out by that foreign company Delhaize out of Belgium and got caught bleaching meats. I hate to have only one option and I do hate crowds but I'd rather do my shopping American company based in Abingdon which was always much better than FoodLion was in terms of prices and selection, hence, FoodLion is out of business. There's always a Payless 5 minutes down the road, but it's always just as expensive there if not more.

I had noticed FoodLions old employees at Food City but I sure didnt jnow they took away those that worked at Food City. I think that ashame if they did do that to them. I have shopped at Payless before and I think its a nice store. Alot of people say its nasty and their meats are no good but the last time I was there I thought it was clean and the meats looked real good. Food Country in Duffield is way expensive and the drive there isnt worth the gas to put in a vehicle.

Food inflation is a national problem. Over the past few years beef is up 10% annually and most everything else is about at 5% inflation. The blame goes far beyond the local supermarket to a govt that has printed off billions and sunk the value of a dollar. Gas prices are up too but Fas Mart isn't at fault. That's why virtually anywhere now still open is "expensive" while food lion which closed seems more reasonable because of the prices they had then. Pulling a "K-mart" and not renovating doesn't equal lower prices.

yep, Payless is just 5 miles up the road, but we shouldnt have to travel out of Big stone gap because the 1 store we have ,their prices are so high, they had hotdogs in their deli for 2 for 2.oo then over night they when up to 2 for 3.49, you use to get a drink with the combo not now,and the points on their card whats up with that, the customers are not saving anything , and by the time you buy everything you have to in order to get those points what have you saved, I hate shopping at that one store, please someone open up a small store something like pronto market or the store papaw talked about helberts market, just saying.

I love food city do all my shopping there. I've compared the prices they are not very expensive, WalMart is only pennies cheaper and I know the meat is NOT fresh at WalMart my husband use to work there. It sits on the back prepackaged for DAYS before it comes out. Food Lion on the other hand was too high priced and that building is not being rented because the people that OWN it want too much money! Get all your facts straight!

I so any "real" shopping in that store. Only if I just have to get something quick ane that is rare.. I would rather spend my money on gas and go to Wal-mart in Norton enjoy a ride get things I don't have to pay a "war pension" for and ride on back to the house.. But that's just me.. Personally I hate the place..

I'm sure Valero, Chinamart, and the Norton tax coffers appreciate it. Walmart is more expensive for us. They offer about half the store brands that food city does and I plan meals around the sales paper from FC and sometimes Payless. Milk and frozen foods are room temp by the time you checkout and get home from Norton. Produce looks poor and the meat is all prepackaged and funky. Walmart recently admitted that all beef they carried had pink slime and who knows what else. I wouldn't want to pay more for gas, pay more for groceries, and get worse quality, but that's just me. I agree that this thread appears to be mainly the rantings of a disgrunteld ex-employee.

N0 i did not work at food city or never would if you knew how they treat there employees Like the reason why all foodlion employees work there is because ex manger Mark hubbard worked for food lion and he brought them in foodcity and started most of them making more then the employees that was all ready there like the asst manger came right from foodlion in over top every one and for the foodcity sniches on here saying iam a ex employee your wrong and they would get rid of you in a heart beat do the wrong thing. I know a person that works there does there best and because were they come from they get treated like trash. why do you think long johns whent out because foodcity bought the land when they expanded tore it down so it would not compete with there hot bar

I just want to throw this in...Long John's went out of business because their headquarters chose to close some stores and the one in Big Stone Gap was one of them. The one in Norton also closed at the same time. Is that Food City's fault too? Correct me if I am wrong but I believe there is a Family Dollar sitting in the spot where Long John's once stood. I think you should at least get your facts straight before posting it for everyone to see. And you say that you are not an ex employee of Food City, well you seem to know alot of what goes on behind the scenes there. Note sarcasm here. You seem to know nothing. Again...get your facts straight before posting them for everyone to see.
