I also just read 'a child called it'
I don't understand how it is humanly possible for someone to act like that
She didn't deserve a life!

For anyone interested, here's a list of all the books Pelzer has written. They're not all as sad as the first.

A Child Called It (1995)
The Lost Boy (1997)
A Man Named Dave (1999)
The Privilege of Youth (2004)
Moving Forward (2008)

Also, his brother wrote his own, as he became "it" after Dave was removed from the home. Kind of a sick and twisted game of "tag." This is what is wrong with our system. How that woman could be allowed to have any children in her care is beyond my understanding.

A Brother's Journey: Surviving a Childhood of Abuse, Warner Books (New York, NY), 2005.
A Teenager's Journey, Warner Books, 2006.

I have read Dave Pelzer's first three books, but haven't read his last two or any of his brothers works. I totally agree with all of you on your assessment of Pelzer's mother, however I think your leaving out someone who is also responsible: Pelzer's father. His father was aware of what was going on and did nothing to stop it, nor did he take the children with him when he left the mother. I think some of the blame should be placed on him as he could have easily stopped it had he the desire to do so, which he obviously did not. In cases where there are two adults in a household, I believe that they should both be held accountable, unless the other adult is also being abused then it should depend on the degree of the abuse the other adult suffered and that adult's chances of getting help for her/his family.

If they could not take care of the child or whatever reason.at least give up the child. i know plenty of married couples that can't have kids that would love to have a child to care for and give them the life they deserve .

I have a friend who has been abused continuously for her whole life. We ended up having to call the police one night because she came to my house bleeding from wounds inflicted by a knife. Now, she lives with her aunt and her mother and father are in jail, but sometimes I still think of how lucky I am to have the parents that I do.

i just got done reading "a child called it" by dave pelzer. and to be honest i cant believe it took so long for someone to step in and say enough is enough. our child abuse rate has gone up alot. my friend was a child abuse victim. she died at the age of 15 from a blow to the head that her father gave her right before he sent her to bed. Today she would have 21. because of me and a couple other of her friends her dad is now serving a life sentence... please if you know of anyone gettin abused to hesitate to step in and help.
