Collective bargaining meetings between public employers and employee organizations are private, and are not subject to section 121.22 of the Revised Code.

Effective Date: 04-01-1984

The amendment to this section by 129th General Assembly File No. 10, SB 5,§ 1 was rejected by voters in the November, 2011 election.

Agendas, proposals, and contracts are, however, public records and may be accessed by any concerned citizen.

Let's see both side's proposals.

I believe we as a community are smart enough to decipher the information contained within each one.

It is PUBLIC MONEY, our money that they are haggling over, so let us stay informed.

While we discuss reform, let us all not forget who that reform effects the most, our children. All of them deserve more than what we are giving them now.
They may cry about getting an education today, but will thank you many years down the road in ways you cannot begin to fathom today.

At the 1/10 BOE meeting there were scores of community attendees who certainly would've liked to have heard more legitimate community discussion regarding the potential of a conversion school. What a shame SELFISH UNION THUGS had to ruin that opportunity.

What does that make the colleges that offer millions of dollars a year to our failing school children? How is the college acceptance rate so high in our graduating classes of barely proficient and less than proficient students?

Back in the day when you were in school where did your test scores fall? In the anti-tax-the-schools-are-run-b y-union-thugs-who-want-a-hando ut-and-dont-take-personal-resp onsiblity-for-leaching-my-hard -earned-money why is your child's success contingent upon the effectiveness of the babysitter in the classroom? Why don't you take on the responsibility of sitting with your child and studying at home? Aren't you pushing the blame for your child's poor performance on the teacher instead of yourself. It's your kid. If your kid needs a private tutor, extra hel, or motivation to succeed isn't that your responsiblity?

Bull, thank you for your kind words. It is not according to me but rather the results from the state, an unbiased assessment of what our students have learned. Many children in our district are doing quite well, however, just as many are not getting the education that we, the taxpayers, are funding. Those children, nearly 3/8 of each class, are not graduating with a plethora of scholarship offers.

When you address the college issue, you may also well note that 25% of our Springboro graduates in Ohio colleges are taking at least one remedial education class to make up for the deficiencies in the high school program of study. Parents are paying hard earned cash for classes in college that should have been mastered at the high school level for free.

Not everyone is as good a parent as you evidently are, some struggle with life in a variety of ways you cannot imagine. Yet each one of those children has been promised an education, a real education that helps them prepare for life after high school.

If you have a problem with the reporting of our test results, perhaps you should investigate why and how this is happening. Fraud is being perpetrated upon the parents of this state by a system that euphemistically labels failure Proficient.

When the people accept these semantic whitewashes as truth, we are entering the dystopian world made infamous by George Orwell.

3) Raising the standards by which we choose to operate and then enforcing those standards will pay huge dividends for all involved, from administrators, to teachers, to parents, to children, to taxpayers. We are not condemned to troll the base standards that the state employs, we are perfectly free to aim so much higher.
4) Real achievement that can be measured and quantified. While some may call that teaching to the test, I call that basic knowledge required to function productively in this society. Feasting on semantics to cover up failure is no substitute for actual learning and academic achievement. Rote learning of your math tables may seem boring, but the results are undeniable. Build self esteem with actual accomplishment, not with a false Honor Society where the top 70% of your class is recognized as deserving that accolade.
5) Recognize that not all children learn in the same environment and realize that other choices may be necessary. Some may thrive under a more rigorous discipline setting, while different children wilt under the same authority. Build programs that allow parents the choice of where their child should attempt to succeed.
6) We are not fated to repeat the past in hopes of gaining an alternate ending. We are free to reinvent the system, let us grasp this opportunity and move both our school district and our children forward now.
7) Speak up against the status quo and demand true excellence throughout the school district. Only the vox populi can stem this tide of mediocrity.
Thanks to factual information presented by just watching, we can see that the next step that should be taken by our Springboro Board of Education, is voting on a contract to hire a professional consulting group to guide our schools/parents/community members in seeking answers to why Springboro needs to consider conversion schools.

Our status quo board member Don Miller will continue sitting on the board protecting our public schools union employees and our public schools outdated rating of excellent with distinction.
Long time status quo board member Don Miller has voted consistently against our children first budgeting; and will continue protesting in favor of our public schools status quo; just preaching to the choir his tunnel vision arguments that our kids need not strive for greater achievement, because they are already as good as they can be.

Aren't parents also responsible for taking charge of their child's school tax dollars (paid for by all taxpayers) making sure that each child gets that one-of-a-kind education that "motivates" each child to higher achievements, such as would be the advantage of conversion schools that could their child's "unmet needs" in the public schools classroom? How selfish of parents who are content with "no complaints" that "one size doesn't fit all in education" and "status quo" is the tunnel vision way for our children's future.

Somehow that rings quite hollow.

A teacher friend of mine suggested we get some retired teachers in the primary disciplines (reading, writing, arithmetic, etc) and then have them run the study halls. Place kids in the math study hall with a former math teacher to aid the children struggling in math. Aggregate the poor readers in a study hall that caters to those with reading difficulties. Etc, etc, etc. These teachers could work part time each day to run a couple of study halls.

It seemed like a simple solution to a vexing problem. Hiring people to come in and baby sit study halls is insane. I have been in more than a few and the lack of focus is appalling. Put people with educational skills in these halls and let's get something productive done.

Dear Mr. Petrey and Board Members,

I would like to thank you for doing your best to restore truth and full disclosure to our school district. I know you are inundated by a few hundred in the community led by Lisa Babb and David Bowman, telling you what you are doing is wrong, unethical, damaging to our students and tearing this community apart.

The union seems to lie in wait for you to do anything they can attack. Perhaps if they spent a fourth of that time trying to work with you to rid our school district of corruption and truly putting kids first, the district could make more progress.

I have heard this group numerous times state the "whole community" agrees with them. I would like to ask you not buy into that! Please! While I would never be so arrogant as to say I am speaking for anyone other than myself, I do feel that we have "proof" that the majority of this community does NOT agree with them.

4 of the 5 of our current board members were VOTED in to office by this community. Mr. Petry and Mrs. Kull were CHOSEN by the people we voted in. Personally, I voted for you all based on what you said you would do. I have been very pleased. I realize the silent majority of this community does not show up at board meetings to yell and behave disrespectfully. This silent majority doesn't call park meetings to "save our schools", "save our sports", "save our principal", "save extra curriculars" or to "save" anything else, but PLEASE know that we are still here! We support YOU and have entrusted YOU to "save" our schools.

I appreciate the updates on what you all have done and what you are trying to do. I believe since this community, through our taxes, pays the salaries and benefits of our teachers and staff, we have every right to know what is happening with negotiations. I do understand that some things may need to be kept confidential, but I want to know who is offering what and is being refused and accepted. I sympathize with our staff when changes have to made that are not easy or well liked. No one wants to pay more for insurance or not receive a pay raise etc, but that is what the rest of us are having to do.

Why does the staff feel they are entitled to more than the majority of the community they work for? It is very frustrating to hear staff members out in public saying the board wants them to take a 30% pay cut across the board, or the staff is one of the lowest paid in the surrounding area, or that we can't keep bus drivers because they are paid so poorly. None of this sounds like putting kids first!

In this economy, I think they should all be thankful that they have their jobs to begin with. Having to pay 20 or even 30% of your health care benefits may seem terrible when you are used to having to pay 5%, but, times have changed! While I truly want them to stay here and work with us, I believe that if they are not happy with a fair wage for an honest days work, then this school system is better off without them. There are hundreds of well qualified teachers that would be honored to work in Springboro Schools and help keep our district at the top. Instead of being thankful for the opportunities that are here for them, they want to spread lies and use bullying tactics (like those our children are taught NOT to use) to try to strong arm you into giving into their demands.

PLEASE stay true to your values!
Do not succumb to the bullying of a small few. I am counting on you to stand up for us, to be who you said you would be during your campaigns, and to do what you said you would do.

I think it's safe to say that both the BOE and teachers union has faults in our district. I have no problem paying teachers a respectable wage to produce a quality education for my students. I also agree that some areas of spending in this district needs to be examined to determine if the results are effectively helping our students. The bad blood and bickering between both groups has led to a bad atmosphere in this community. I hope some kind of common ground is found soon if everyone is truly putting "children first". Lets find ways to give our students better opportunities and find effective ways to help our community grow.
I do keep hearing a lot about how 3/8 of our students are struggling, but how does that compare to other districts in our area? Does Lebanon, Lakota, Centerville, and other schools have more or less struggling students?

We cannot control what happens in other school districts, only in ours are we masters of our fate.

The people of this community pay to educate all of our children in a manner that provides them a fighting chance in life once they leave our system.

To dismiss these children as acceptable casualties in the battle of education is UNACCEPTABLE.

Not only can we do better, it is imperative that we do so.

2000 plus children's futures are depending upon our actions today.

Let us not let them down just because other districts are doing thus.

Where is the vaunted Boro Pride when it comes to helping those in academic need that don't happen to be our children?

The majority of this community voted NO 5 times yet they did not stand up at board meetings and make a show. Perhaps people have an opinion that they don't feel necessary to be on camera spouting. What has been happening. For years the public education system has been funneling money away from education and feeding it to adults.

This system has intentionally disguised the truth so that parents and community members did not see the failures. If you don't identify them you think everything is honky dori and you write your check for property taxes. If the system had identified and made public the shortfalls in the system then they would admit they need to be addressed and low, the money would be redirected from adults to the kids. You see, this is what Babb either does know and she works to keep the wool pulled over everyone's eyes or she does not know and she is simply blinded by emotions and loyalties for the adults. Unfortunately either way she can be blamed for the charade and poor performances for our education system . People like her might even think they are doing good. People like her work for the cause all over this country and as such keep our nation a global looser in education.

Springboro schools does a fantastic job at keeping kids on a steady course. They graduate where they came into the system. I do not believe this school district takes kids from a lower start point to a higher one. Springboro starts with the best student population and needs to take them to the next level. Unfortunately, I don't think they do that now. We have those parents that teach their own children, take them to museums and travel to cool places to learn of history and other cultures.

We have a great formula here. We have the best kids, best parents, best community support and yes, some of the best teachers and admin. We could make Springboro a National leader because we are not afraid to address our students needs, first admitting we have some, but some people in this community are in it for the fight only calling this a war and not thinking about the kids at all. It comes down to pure politics and not improving our education system. Please help stop the people working to hurt our kids. Tell them to stop spreading vicious rumors and tell the truth its "for the kids".
