I hate Walmart. I was looking over my receipts for the past year, and I was amazed at the THOUSANDS of dollars I have spent there. I know this opinion is shared with the majority of you, and I am guessing that the money savings is what keeps you going back like me. If I had money, I would pay the extra to spend it in a local store. So! Instead of complaining maybe we could all work together to inform each other of local stores with prices on commmon items that are comparable to Walmart. What do you think?

Walmart Prices on my common purchases:
Huggies Supreme (big box)$21
3lb Ground Turkey $5.50
3lb Frozen Chicken Breast $6.50
Maxwell House Coffee $6

I could go on and on, but dont want to waste my time if it wont work. Let me know :)

I haven't found anywhere that sells the baby stuff cheaper and the main problem I have with changing my shopping habits is time. Its just so convenient to get it all at one place instead of getting kids in and out of the car multiple times. I wish I could help.

Try Lowe's Food if you want a shock. Bag of dog food that I buy at Wal Mart for $10 is $14.95 at Lowe's Foods.

Lowe's prices are ridiculous. If they want to stay competitive, they are going to have to do something. I've even seen Food Lion show that they want to compete with Walmart on many things. Lowe's "sales" are a joke.

I do what my mother and grandmothers used to do.. shop the sale ads. Lowes does have some things that are lower than Wal-Mart on sale. So does Fairvalue.

I live out in the country, so it's not so easy to just pop into Wal-Mart (or any other store) for things. If I'm going to Viewmont, I take my list of sale items from Lowes and stop in Bethlehem (which I have always found lower priced than the Lowes on 321 in Hickory). If I need to go to Granite for something, I stop in Fairvalue on the way home if there is something I need on sale there.

I agree about the baby items.. it's hard to beat Wal-Mart for them, but there are comparable items at other stores, if you want to use them. Same with pet food, if name brand is not important.

It's all about personal preference and habit in the end, isn't it?

I'm not completely anti-Wal-Mart. I just hate to see local stores shut down because a Wal-Mart moves into town. Regardless of Wal-Mart's price, the reliable and personal service is in those small stores. So is the salvation of the small town, itself.

For about a year I have been buying Textured Soy Protein as a substitute for ground beef. I buy three 10 pound bags at a time for $52.00 with free shipping if you enter V100 in the coupon box. Once rehydrated, 1 pound equals 3 poundsÂ… so 30 pounds of TSP would equal 90 pounds when water is added. You have to add seasonings in order for it to most resemble hamburger. It mostly tastes like turkey burger if left unseasoned. This stuff has as much protein as beef, no cholesterol or fat. It is very expensive if purchased in 8 oz. bags at the health food store, but if you buy in bulk online it is dirt cheap in comparison. It will keep forever, but after I open a big bag, I put into plastic bags and freeze. I also eat a lot of Seitan (wheat gluten), it mixes up like dough and you can shape it into chicken strips or whatever. It also is very healthy and somewhat inexpensive if purchased in big bags. You can also make it from scratch and that would be for not much more than the price of flour. I am now a master at making fake meats... I can make fake chicken, beef, sausage, pork chops, beef roast, turkey roast etc.--- I serve this stuff to people all the time and they usually can't even tell the difference. If you have ever wondered why Chinese food bars are so inexpensive, this is why! Asians are masters at making fake meats.

Plum jam $00.00,
greens $00.00,
cornbread $2.56 5lbs.
tators $5.50,
beer $6.86,
I eat plum jam for a whole season for sur-gel, sugar,
I really love the stuff I eat. I am gonna make deer jerky all day tomorrow with my son. No walmart, no lines don't even have to walk into a fart.

But every once in awhile I go to Wally World or Food Smart and squander some serious denario for gourmet cuisine

If you take your coupons and go to lowes, they double them up to .99 cents and I have saved a ton by using coupons. I supply alot of items I get for free with coupons to the food bank at church. right now, i have some .75 cents off dukes mayo that lowes will double to 1.50. they sell the small jars for 1.59 so I pay .9 cents for a jar of mayo. There was coupons for a totally free roll of paper towels in the charlotte paper a few weeks ago. I have a ton of paper towels now. for tax only. you wanna save money, start using coupons for the items you need. I have alot of 1.00 off turkey or ham right now and food lion has the little packs for 1.09 so that will be cheap sandwich meats for me.

Remember why Wal-Mart has everything like this, they want to keep you in the store longer so that you will buy more (also the reason their prescription meds are so cheap). The best thing to to is make a list of what you need, and when you go to the store, get only what's on your list. Impulse buying makes up for a lot of Walmart's cash flow - so don't help them! Stick to your list and get out the door. You'll probably save a lot of money that way.

Baby items can almost always be purchased at CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens cheaper than you can purchase them at Walmart. The thing is that you have to shop their sales. You know your going to need diapers for the next couple years if you have a newborn. If you need diapers today and they aren't on sale at a drug store then yes, you can get them cheaper at Walmart. If you shop the drug stores when they are having a good diaper sale and buy multiple packs that will last you until they go on sale again then your going to save money. Also, those of you purchasing baby items, google websites that will send you coupons in the mail. I get some type of coupon(s) for baby items in the mail several times a week.
Same thing goes for items such as body wash, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, pain relievers, razors and batteries. It may be a little time consuming to look at all the ads and figure out what the best deal is, but in my opinion it beats giving my money to wally world!

Why would anyone buy plastic diapers? they last hundreds of years in landfills. Times that by hundreds of diapers per child. You probably also have 4 which doubled your population rather than replacing yourselves at 2 kids per family. Plastic diapers are something to only be used in case of evacuating to a shelter in case of hurricane etc. or when traveling on a plane. You can get biodegradeable ones for those purposes. You truly don't care about anything but yourself. The problem here is your mentality. The people I know give gifts of baby diaper service to the new parents. If you have your own house you can get a free washer off craigslist, put it on your back porch or garage, and run a hot water line to it. Stupid and selfish. You are responsible for Garbage Island in the ocean that is so big they can't find giant planes that go down because there is so much floating garbage, which also chokes sea life and fills their stomachs and kills them when they eat it thinking it is food. Well I wont blame you too much, you probably live in a state where creationism is in the text books in skool.
