Truth About Milk

As a parent of three children, ages nine, twelve and fourteen, I am constantly searching the web and paying close attention to claims made about health risks associated with food. One claim I have heard a lot about is the negative effects of milk with added hormones. Don’t we all, animals included, have hormones in our systems naturally? So, even if a cow doesn’t have added hormones, don’t they still have their own hormones in them? After a lot of online research and talking to a dietician friend, I realized that the claims are focused on milk products with added hormones, or what they call rbST, may not be as bad as some advertisers are implying.

Website after website cited scientific studies that could not find any distinguishable differences in the milk supplemented with rbST and regular milk. The most common claim was blaming supplemented milk for kids going through puberty earlier. What? I found more reliable claims that said it was actually because more of our kids are getting fat than ever before.

Common phrases keep appearing- all milk is safe. All milk is healthy. Based on what I have read, I believe what they are saying. It appears this “hormone free milk” is a marketing phrase that has caught on with our health-conscious society. We are so quick to believe what we hear and read that we often fail to study the facts. Milk, in all its forms, should be a part of everyone’s diet. Whether you choose organic, rbST supplemented or regular milk seems to just be a personal preference.

This is based on my own research and I could have missed something. If you want to find out for yourself, check out some of the reading I came across. I am interested to hear others’ perspective on this.

Check these out.
